Biographie
Eicca Toppinen (born 1975) is a Finnish composer, cellist, and producer. He studied classical cello at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. He is best known for founding the groundbreaking cello-metal band APOCALYPTICA in 1993. Apocalyptica has released nine studio albums, selling over six million copies, and has toured more than 50 countries with nearly 2,000 performances.
Eicca composed the scores for the films "Black Ice" (2007) directed by Petri Kotwica (Making Movies), earning him a Jussi Award for Best Score, and "Aquarela" (2019) by Victor Kossakovsky (Sony Pictures Classics), which garnered him nominations at the Critics' Choice Documentary Awards (Best Score) and Cinema Eye Honors (Outstanding Achievement in Original Score).
Several of his compositions have topped single, radio, and album charts worldwide and have been featured in soundtracks for movies such as "Bad Boys" (2003), "Vidocq" (2001), "Addiction" (2004), the video game "Death Stranding" (Hideo Kojima, 2020), and TV series like "Dollhouse" (2010) and "Smallville" (2009). He has collaborated as a songwriter with Max Martin, Guy Sigsworth, Diane Warren, Martin Hansen, among others, and arranged music for artists including Metallica, Rammstein, Slipknot, and Three Days Grace.
His other composing projects include music for theater (Finnish National Theatre, 2000), the opera "Indigo" for the Finnish National Opera (2016, co-created with Perttu Kivilaakso), and in 2012, he composed and produced "Wagner Reloaded," a dance and stage performance by Gregor Seyffert featuring Apocalyptica, the MDR Symphony Orchestra and Choir (conducted by Kristjan Järvi), and 120 dancers at the Leipzig Arena. His music has been featured in numerous documentaries, dance and theater productions, and commercials worldwide.
