Biographie
Renowned for his distinctive artistic vision and profound appreciation of music, Alan Kozlowski is an award-winning visual artist, filmmaker, and Grammy-nominated music producer. Drawn to the world music culture of 1960s San Francisco, Alan relocated to Spain in 1968 to study under the legendary Gypsy flamenco guitarist Diego del Gastor. Soon after, he began exploring photography and the visual arts. His broad interests and talents blend rich life experiences with a flair for technology, crafting a dynamic fusion of artistic exploration and creative expression.
Much of Alan's work centers on his mentor, teacher, and close friend Ravi Shankar. Introduced to Ravi’s music at a 1965 concert in San Francisco, Alan was fortunate to meet him in 1978, sparking 35 years of study and collaboration. Alan performed alongside Ravi worldwide, including at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and London’s Royal Opera House. To honor Ravi’s 75th birthday, Alan co-produced "In Celebration," a four-CD collector’s edition with George Harrison. In 1993, Alan directed "Ravi Shankar: The Concert For World Peace" at London’s Royal Albert Hall, released globally by A&E. In October 2011, he filmed "Ravi Shankar, Tenth Decade In Concert: Live In Escondido," later issued on DVD. From 1978 until Ravi’s final concert in November 2012, Alan documented major milestones of his life and managed his archives for 25 years.
After Ravi’s passing in December 2012, Alan utilized the archives to create "Sangeet Ratna" (Jewel Of Music), a 35-minute tribute presented at Ravi’s memorial in Nehru Park, New Delhi, in March 2013. He is currently expanding the short film into a full-length documentary.
Alan’s dedication to documenting music led to collaborations with artists like Jackson Browne, Jeff Bridges, Kenny Loggins, Lee Ritenour, Lionel Richie, Michael Hedges, Michael McDonald, and Earth, Wind & Fire. In 1994, Alan served as Director of Photography, co-producer, and editor on the Disney documentary "Jackson Browne: Going Home," an intimate look at life on tour, which won the cable ACE Award for Best Music Special of the Year. More recently, he traveled with Jackson to Cuba to film a Playing For Change video collaboration performing "Guantanamera" with musicians worldwide.
Beyond filming music, Alan produces artists such as Indian vocalist Lakshmi Shankar, whose album "Dancing In The Light" was Grammy-nominated, and Spanish flamenco pianist Pedro Ricardo Miño with his album "Piano Flamenco."
Alan collaborated with Jeff Bridges and T-Bone Burnett on supplemental material for the Academy Award-winning film "Crazy Heart" and developed all promotional and live performance videos for Jeff’s 2012 Blue Note Records release, "Jeff Bridges."
As Director of Photography, Alan demonstrated his skill in the visually compelling film "For Us The Living: The Medgar Evers Story" (1983, directed by Michael Schultz, starring Howard E. Rollins Jr., Irene Cara, Laurence Fishburne, and Roscoe Lee Browne) and the acclaimed award-winning film "Travellers and Magicians" (2003, directed by Khyentse Norbu). The latter premiered at the Venice and Toronto film festivals to critical praise and won Best of Festival at the 2004 Telluride Mountain Film Festival.
In 1984, Alan co-founded Pacific Ocean Post, a premier film and television post-production studio in Santa Monica, California. Employing over 300 specialists in visual effects, animation, sound, and editing, the studio pioneered digital technology integration with visual storytelling. Under Alan’s leadership, Pacific Ocean Post contributed to the Visual Effects Oscars for Independence Day (1997), Titanic (1998), and What Dreams May Come (1999). In 1998, POP was acquired by Liberty Media, enabling Alan to return to his artistic endeavors.
Alan’s photographic work includes the publication of "On The Path-Tibet," a collection from his travels in Tibet, and exhibitions in London, Santa Monica, Telluride, Malibu, Bangkok, and Koh Samui.
In 2002, Alan founded On The Path, a performing arts center, gallery, and multimedia production space in Santa Monica. He later ventured into new media, co-creating two iPad apps. "On The Music Path" provides immersive one-on-one lessons with renowned musicians like Jackson Browne, Richard Thompson, and Eric Johnson. "Imagine Clarity" offers mindfulness meditation resources tailored for the corporate sector, with Alan serving as creative director.
