Biographie
Nicholas Carella is an acclaimed creator, actor, writer, and producer known for his dedication to engaging projects. Shortly after graduating, he co-founded Ante-M Theatre with Michelle Ouellet, producing independent theatre in Toronto for nearly ten years, including the Canadian premiere of Michael John LaChiusa's musical "Hello Again." In 2009, Nicholas earned a Canadian Comedy Award nomination for Best Screenplay (with Vince Gabriele) for his feature film debut, "Hooked on Speedman," which was distributed by Entertainment One and held a decade-long broadcast license in North America. In 2011, he co-founded Sociable Films alongside Michelle Ouellet and Ali Liebert, producing their flagship feature film "Afterparty," distributed by Mongrel Media.
Nicholas has also established himself in Digital Media as head writer and showrunner of the Canadian Screen Award-nominated and Leo Award-winning web series "The True Heroines." He co-created, with David Milchard, the IPF and Telus-funded, Leo Award-nominated digital series "Paranormal Solutions Inc." (PSI), which also marked his directorial debut with the episode "Sasquatch is your BC Bud." His most recent produced screenplay, "Prodigals," was nominated for Best Screenplay at the 2018 Leo Awards. As an educator, Nicholas helped design the curriculum for School Creative's Diploma in Screenwriting Program in Vancouver, BC, teaching courses on web writing, screenplay structure, and story & creativity for three years before returning to Toronto in 2018. In 2019, he and Michelle Ouellet completed the NSI Totally TV Program, creating the one-hour medical procedural "Ethics 101," which led to a development and production deal with Sienna Films.
Alongside writing and producing, Nicholas has acted in over sixty television shows and films, receiving several award nominations including Best Actor at the Canadian Comedy Awards for "Hooked on Speedman" and Best Supporting Actor at the Leo Awards for "Afterparty." His acting career began with "The Famous Jett Jackson" and "Odyssey 5," and he has since held recurring roles on series such as "Bates Motel" (A&E), "Harper's Island" (CBS), "Shut Eye" (Hulu), and "Mistresses" (ABC), as well as roles in feature films like "Citizen Duane," "Prodigals," and the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival selection "Buffaloed" (directed by Tanya Wexler and starring Zoey Deutch). He has also guest-starred on shows including "Motive," "Fringe," "Supernatural," "Designated Survivor," and "V," among many other prime-time dramas. His latest project is the feature-length comedy "Us in 9 Months," co-written with Dave Deveau and winner of the CFF Harold Greenberg Screenwriting Contest, in which he will play the lead role. The film is produced by Mary Young Leckie ("Maudie") and directed by Michelle Ouellet, with pre-production planned once conditions return to a new normal.
After many years in Vancouver, Nicholas recently relocated to Toronto, ON, with his wife and their dog, Kricket.
