Zhang Jizhong is undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in Chinese film and television, widely recognized as a leading TV series producer and prominent entertainment celebrity in China. Over the past twenty years, he has earned numerous commercially successful and critically acclaimed credits as a producer.
With a deep understanding of Chinese culture, Zhang’s productions are distinguished by their epic storytelling, grand battle scenes, martial arts, romance, and artistic flair. His signature production approach combines cultural heritage with significant financial success, making him one of the most in-demand producers in China.
Born in Beijing in 1951, Zhang faced many challenges early in life due to his family’s political background. In 1978, he joined the Shanxi drama theatre group as a stage actor before transitioning to roles in film and television, ultimately becoming a full-time producer.
Zhang’s breakthrough came with the award-winning historical epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, produced for China Central Television (CCTV). This series established him as a top TV producer, praised for his ability to recreate large-scale historical war scenes using massive sets and thousands of extras. He followed this success with Water Margin in 1997, another grand adaptation of one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels, which achieved both commercial success and critical praise.
During the past decade, Zhang has produced several high-budget TV adaptations of Louis Cha’s wuxia novels, enjoying commercial success across China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other Asian markets. His wuxia productions have also launched the careers of notable Chinese actors such as Yifei Liu, Xiaoming Huang, Jun Hu, and Xun Zhou.
Zhang has developed eleven large-scale film cities across China, financed by local governments. These sites have become popular tourist attractions, boosting local economies through tourism revenue and improved infrastructure, while also saving millions in production expenses. Notable examples include the Peach Blossom Island film city in Zhejiang and the Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils film city in Yunnan province, both now major tourist destinations.
Currently, Zhang is in pre-production for a film trilogy adaptation of Journey to the West, another of China’s Four Great Classical Novels, centered on the iconic Monkey King. The project aims to feature top-tier visual effects and international talent, aspiring to rival Hollywood fantasy franchises like Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series. Additionally, Zhang is developing a theme park, online game, and TV series based on digital content from the Monkey King and Journey to the West.
