Biographie
Gonçalo Waddington is a Portuguese actor, theater and film director, playwright, and screenwriter. Born in Lisbon in 1977, he studied theater and performance at the Drama School in the coastal town of Cascais from 1994 to 1997. While still a student, he made his television debut in 1996 on Polícias, a TV series centered on a police precinct. His film debut occurred in 2006 with Marco Martins's Alice, and he also appeared in Martins's 2016 film Saint George. Waddington’s short film Nameless premiered at the 2010 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival, while Immaculate debuted at the 2013 IndieLisboa film festival. His first play, Albertine, The Celestial Continent—based on Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time—marked his debut as a playwright; he also directed and starred in it alongside his longtime partner, Carla Maciel. He acted in Odisseia, a 2013 comedy TV show that he created, co-wrote, and co-starred in. Together with Carla Maciel, he co-created the play MacBain, written specifically for them by Dutch playwright Gerardjan Rijnders, which premiered in October 2013 at Teatro Maria Matos in Lisbon. In 2016, Waddington wrote and directed the first installment of a tetralogy titled Our Favorite Sport, subtitled Present, which premiered at the Alkantara and FITEI festivals and was published as a book the same year. The second part, subtitled Distant Future, premiered in 2017 at Teatro Municipal São Luiz in Lisbon. His film credits include Blood Curse and Noise by Frederico Serra and Tiago Guedes—the latter having co-written and directed Odisseia with him—and Guedes also directed him in a 2016 production of Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck at Teatro Nacional D. Maria II. Additionally, Waddington appeared in the 2014 short film Chorus, based on a play by Tiago Rodrigues, and the TV miniseries Noite Sangrenta. He directed and starred in a production of Ibsen’s Rosmersholm at Centro Cultural de Belém, first in February 2011, followed by a nationwide tour. His other film performances include roles in Margarida Cardoso’s Yvone Kane, João Canijo’s Misbegotten, João Leitão’s The Portuguese Falcon, Ivo M. Ferreira’s April Showers, and Valeria Sarmiento’s The Lines of Wellington. In 2018, he is set to make his feature film directorial debut with Patrick, produced by O Som e a Fúria, with the film expected to premiere in 2019.
