Biographie
Barbara Bredero studied Theater-Film-Television at the University of Amsterdam and began her career as a first assistant director before transitioning to directing. She collaborated with notable directors such as Heddy Honigmann, Johan Nijenhuis, Rita Horst, Ruud van Hemert, and Theo van Gogh. In 1998, she started directing her own projects, primarily for television, including shows like Meiden van de Wit, Westenwind, Floor Faber, and Klokhuis. She served as Creative Director for the daily TV series VRIJland and directed the TV series Sammy Paramaribo in Suriname (South America). Her first short film, FROM LINNAEUSSTREET WITH LOVE (Liefs uit de Linnaeusstraat), dedicated to Theo van Gogh, was released in 2005. Bredero made her feature film debut in 2008 with the children’s movie MORRISON GETS A BABYSISTER (Morrison krijgt een zusje). She later directed the highly successful MISTER TWISTER (Mees Kees) trilogy, with all three films drawing 600,000 viewers each, a record in the Netherlands.
Her feature films have garnered numerous national and international awards, including both audience and jury prizes. Additionally, Barbara Bredero has served on international juries at the Cairo, Zlin, and Cinekid film festivals in Amsterdam.
Following these projects, she directed the youth film MY GIRAFFE (Dikkertje Dap), based on a poem by Annie M. G. Schmidt, and the feel-good comedy SPEECH (Taal is zeg maar echt mijn ding), inspired by Paulien Cornelisse’s book. MY GIRAFFE (2017) was nominated for the Cinekid jury prize, the Crystal Bear at Berlinale 2018, and the Audience Award Golden Calf at the Dutch Film Festival 2018. It also won Best Actor and Best Director awards in Yaroslav, Russia, in 2018. The film has been sold to 13 countries, including China, with releases in China, Belgium, and Germany in 2018.
SPEECH (2018) earned four awards at the Glendale International Film Festival in the US: Best of Fest, Best Actress, Best Female Director, and Best Film made by a woman.
