Marianna Vertinskaya is a Russian actress known for her work on stage and in film.
She was born Marianna Aleksandrovna Vertinskaya on July 28, 1943, aboard a train headed to Shanghai, China. Her father, Aleksandr Vertinskiy, was a renowned White Russian émigré celebrated as an actor, singer, and songwriter. Her mother, Lidiya Vertinskaya (born Lidia Vladimirovna Tsirgvava), was also a Russian émigré from a Georgian-Russian family in Kharbin. Marianna’s younger sister, Anastasiya Vertinskaya, was born in 1944 in Moscow, Russia, then part of the Soviet Union.
Marianna enjoyed a happy childhood alongside her sister Anastasiya, growing up in a multilingual household enriched by an intellectually and culturally vibrant environment fostered by their parents. She was especially close to her father, who devoted considerable talent and effort to her education. Aleksandr Vertinskiy passed away when Marianna was 15, an event that deeply affected her youth. From 1962 to 1966, she studied acting under A. Borisov at the Shchukin Theatrical School associated with the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow, graduating in 1966.
Since 1966, Marianna Vertinskaya has been a member of the Vakhtangov Theatre company in Moscow. Throughout her career there, she performed alongside notable actors such as Mikhail Ulyanov, Ruben Simonov, Vladimir Etush, Varvara Popova, Irina Kupchenko, Natalya Tenyakova, Yuliya Borisova, Lyudmila Maksakova, Lyudmila Tselikovskaya, Nina Ruslanova, Ekaterina Raykina, Darya Peshkova, Elena Dobronravova, Nikolai Gritsenko, Vasiliy Lanovoy, Yuriy Yakovlev, Vyacheslav Shalevich, Andrei Abrikosov, Grigori Abrikosov, Nikolai Timofeyev, Aleksandr Grave, Evgeniy Karelskikh, and Sergey Makovetskiy, among others.
Marianna Vertinskaya gained acclaim for her leading role in the 1963 revival of Vakhtangov's production of Carlo Gozzi's comedy *Princess Turandot*. She also delivered memorable performances in Dostoevsky's *The Idiot*, Molière's *Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme*, and other plays at the Vakhtangov Theatre. She has been honored with the title of Honored Actress of Russia and continues to live and work in Moscow.
