Biographie
B.R. Chopra, one of India's most esteemed film figures, played a pivotal role in shaping Bollywood's golden era. Known for transforming unconventional stories into timeless classics such as Waqt (1965) and Naya Daur (1957), he holds a prominent place in the global film community.
Born in Lahore in 1914 to an accountant in the British Punjab PWD administration, B.R. Chopra earned an M.A. in English Literature from Lahore University. Driven by a passion for cinema, he shifted from academia to film journalism, much to his family's surprise, starting his career by writing and editing film reviews for the Cine Herald journal.
Following the 1947 partition of India, B.R. became a victim of communal riots, losing his home and relocating to Bombay to pursue his dreams. He produced his first film, Karwat (1949), which failed at the box office. However, his 1951 film Afsana, which he produced and directed, was a major success. Featuring Ashok Kumar in a double role, the movie, centered on mistaken identity, became a silver jubilee hit.
Buoyed by this success, B.R. established B.R. Films in 1955 and quickly found success with Ek-Hi-Rasta (1956), a drama about widow remarriage. He delivered a series of hits, including Naya Daur (1957), Sadhna (1958), Kanoon (1960), Gumrah (1963), and Hamraaz (1967). He also gave his younger brother, Yash Chopra, his directorial debut with the hit Dhool Ka Phool (1959). Yash continued to direct four more films for B.R., such as Waqt (1965) and Ittefaq (1969).
B.R. Chopra consistently focused on socially relevant themes that resonated with audiences. Naya Daur (1957) depicted a traditional rural community threatened by modern mechanization, portraying machinery as a menace defeated by a horse carriage rider. He also pioneered films ahead of their time: Kanoon (1960) was a songless courtroom drama, Gumrah (1963) explored a woman resuming an affair after marriage, and Ittefaq (1969) featured a heroine who murders her husband.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, B.R. continued producing successful films such as Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980), addressing rape, and Nikaah (1982), a Muslim love triangle. His son Ravi attempted to uphold the family banner, with limited success aside from Aaj Ki Awaz (1984), a courtroom drama, and the family saga Baghban (2003). In 1985, B.R. Films ventured into television, creating several acclaimed series, most notably Mahabharat (1988), based on the Hindu epic. This series became one of the most popular in Indian television history, entering the Guinness Book of World Records with a 96% global viewership. The 1988 Mahabharat earned awards, including Best Supporting Role for Nitish Bharadwaja as Lord Krishna, and a Best Actor nomination for Pankaj Dheer. In 1999, B.R. Chopra received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.
This marked yet another milestone for the legendary film mogul.
