Biographie
Annabelle Gurwitch is a New York Times bestselling author, actress, and television host. Her latest book, Wherever You Go, There They Are: Stories About My Family You Might Relate To (Penguin Random House), features stories inspired by her humorously dysfunctional childhood. Her other works include I See You Made an Effort (Penguin Random House), which was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor and a New York Times bestseller; You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up (Random House); and Fired! (Simon & Schuster), which debuted as a Showtime comedy special. As co-host of the popular Dinner & a Movie on TBS, she has also contributed to The New Yorker, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Los Angeles Times, among other outlets, and was a regular commentator on NPR's All Things Considered. Gurwitch is currently adapting Wherever You Go, There They Are for Janollari Entertainment and NBC. She also adapted I See You Made an Effort with Liz Tuccillo and producer Sarah Condon for F/X, and You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up with Jeff Kahn for Lifetime.
Her one-woman show based on I See You Made an Effort premiered in Los Angeles, performed at the Edinburgh Theater Festival, and toured nationally in 2017. Together with Kahn, she adapted You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up for the stage; it premiered at the New York Comedy Festival and has been performed at over forty venues across the U.S. and Canada. Gurwitch’s live performances include appearances at Joe’s Pub, Caroline’s on Broadway, the 92nd Street Y, SXSW, UCB, and The Moth.
Her media appearances encompass Real Time with Bill Maher, PBS NewsHour, The Today Show, The CBS Early Show, Dr. Oz, and numerous programs on CNN and MSNBC. Time magazine featured Gurwitch and her film Fired! in their annual "Ten Ideas That Are Changing the World" issue. On Earth Day, she guided millions of viewers on a tour of the nation’s largest landfill on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Acting credits include Better Things, Seinfeld, Boston Legal, Dexter, The Shaggy Dog, Daddy Day Care, and Melvin Goes to Dinner. Her theater work spans numerous Off-Broadway and West Coast productions, including the world premiere of Donald Margulies’ A Coney Island Christmas at The Geffen Playhouse; the West Coast premieres of Go Back to Where You Are by David Greenspan at The Odyssey and Women in Jeopardy at EST Santa Barbara; and the twentieth-anniversary production of UnCommon Women and Others at Second Stage Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Her lead role in Joe and Betty Off-Broadway and in Los Angeles earned her recognition among the Top Ten Performances of the Year by The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.
Gurwitch’s hosting experience includes three seasons of the carbon footprint series WA$TED on The Planet Green Network, as well as projects for NickMom.com, The Style Channel, Sci-Fi, ABC, and The Game Show Network. She also served as the news anchor for HBO’s award-winning Not Necessarily the News.
