Biographie
Souvik Gupta is a writer-filmmaker whose work moves fluidly between intimate human relationships and sharp socio-political narratives, across OTT platforms, digital cinema, and literature.
In 2023, Souvik wrote and directed "Dangerous Affair" for JioCinema’s anthology Fuh Se Fantasy. The romantic thriller quickly became the highest-rated episode across all seasons, cementing his reputation for crafting emotionally layered yet gripping stories.
In 2021, he wrote "Leaked" for AltBalaji, which released on Amazon Prime Mini and went on to trend at #1 for several weeks. Around the same time, he wrote and directed "Yeh Dooriyan", a four-episode mini-series for Humaramovie’s YouTube channel, starring Manjari Fadnis and Paresh Pahuja. The tender love story exploring long-distance marriage received widespread appreciation from audiences and critics alike.
In 2019, Souvik served as Writer (three episodes) and Creative Director for VOOT’s anthology series Fuh Se Fantasy, further strengthening his association with long-form digital storytelling. Prior to that, in 2017-18, he collaborated with the then-emerging Zee5 as writer and creative director for "Mehmaan" - a meditative short drama thriller starring Raima Sen and Kaushik Sen that earned critical acclaim.
His socio-political mini-series "Ranjish" (2016), released on Humaramovie’s YouTube channel, explored terrorism and its impact on communal harmony. The ambitious project garnered rave audience reviews for its sensitive yet powerful storytelling. In 2015, he directed "Fraternal" (produced by Humaramovie), a bold short film that examined the fractured relationship between two brothers while addressing gay rights and child sexual abuse-themes handled with rare nuance and empathy.
Earlier, in 2013, Souvik ventured into literature with his novel "An Unequal Harmony..", which delved into the complex emotional question: Can a person love two individuals at the same time? The book marked a significant expansion of his storytelling canvas.
Souvik's filmmaking journey gained recognition in 2011 with his short film "Neighbour", which he wrote and directed. The film was declared Runners Up at the "Re-Think India" Short Film Competition (conducted by Shamiana and Citizens for Peace), was a finalist at the "Advantage India" competition, and was screened at prestigious platforms including the SHORTS Film Festival (Jamshedpur) and the Kolkata Film Festival, among others.
Beyond filmmaking, Souvik has been an active voice in film criticism and analysis. He has served as a Columnist and Member at Madaboutmoviez.com, engaging deeply with cinema trends and discourse, and previously worked as an Official Movie Reviewer for HT Media’s DesiMartini.
