Her parents soon separated. Initially, she was raised by her mother, but later attended high school in Itzehoe. Hummer spent some time on Trebe and was placed in a youth home. After completing the 11th grade, she left school and moved to Hamburg. Her entry into acting was accidental: after her portrait appeared on the cover of "jetzt" magazine in 1998, director Sebastian Schipper discovered her. Hummer made her on-screen debut in Schipper's comedy "Absolute Giganten" (1999). That same year, despite never having attended drama school, she appeared in the TV crime film "Stahlnetz: The Witness". The following year, she featured in Sören Voigt's comedy "Tolle Lage" and Hans-Christian Schmid's film "Crazy" (2000). On television, she took a role in "Tatort - The Little Witness" (2000), earning the Günter Strack Television Prize the next year.
Simultaneously, Hummer achieved her first major success in 2000 portraying "Jeanne," the terrorist's daughter, in "Internal Security." For her performance in Christian Petzold's terrorist film, she was nominated for the German Film Prize as Best Young Actress. In 2001, Hummer appeared in the TV crime drama "Tatort - Dead sind du!", the children's film "Heidi," and the episodic film "Honolulu." This was followed by "Because I'm good!" in 2002 and "99 Euro Films." In 2003, she starred in the tragicomedy "Eierdiebe" and took the lead in "Northern Star," marking her first on-screen appearance as a singer. By this time, Hummer had also ventured into music, teaching herself guitar and vocals.
In autumn 2004, she embarked on her first tour across Germany with the Julia Hummer Band, performing primarily folk songs she had written herself. In London, her first single "Boxy, Where Are the Spangles" was produced and released at the end of 2004. Her debut album followed in spring 2005. Although Hummer found music to be her true artistic passion, she continued her film career. In 2005, Petzold cast her in a leading role again: in "Ghosts," Julia Hummer portrayed the daughter of a French woman who was abducted as a toddler in Berlin. The film was one of three German entries in competition at the 55th Berlinale in February 2005.
