Harvey Mason Jr. has written and produced songs for music legends such as Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Elton John, as well as contemporary stars like Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, John Legend, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown. His extensive film and TV music credits include work on Jesus Christ Superstar Live!, Sing, The Wiz Live!, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Straight Outta Compton, all three Pitch Perfect films, Dreamgirls, Get On Up, All American Basketball Player, and Shrek, among others.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Harvey’s parents attended the renowned Berklee College of Music. His father, Harvey Mason Sr., is a celebrated jazz drummer and founding member of Fourplay. Harvey Jr. was raised in Los Angeles, often accompanying his father to recording sessions with icons like Quincy Jones, Carole King, The Brothers Johnson, and Herbie Hancock. At just eight years old, he wrote and placed his first song, "Love Makes It Better," for Grover Washington Jr. Alongside his musical talents, Harvey was also an accomplished athlete, earning a basketball scholarship to the University of Arizona, where he played in the 1988 Final Four with teammates Sean Elliott and Steve Kerr.
Expanding beyond music, Harvey utilized his film and TV experience to launch a content production division. He produced and executive produced his first film project, the LeBron James documentary "More Than a Game" for Lionsgate, and is currently producing the highly anticipated MGM biopic "Respect," starring Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin. With three additional projects in development for release in 2020, Mason's future in television and film looks promising.
Harvey has also extended his company's reach into Asia, engaging in business ventures in China and Korea. As one of the first Western companies to enter these emerging pop music markets, he has established himself as a sought-after hitmaker, collaborating with leading Korean groups such as EXO, NCT 127, Girls’ Generation, and Red Velvet, as well as prominent Chinese artists including Jane Zhang and Jackson Yee.
He serves proudly as Chairman of the Board of the Recording Academy and has recently taken on the role of Interim President/CEO. Additionally, he sits on the Board of Trustees for his alma mater, the University of Arizona. Harvey dedicates time and resources to numerous charitable organizations, including GRAMMY in the Schools, MusiCares Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, the American Cancer Society, and Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. In recognition of his philanthropic work, he received the Spirit of Excellence Award from the T.J. Martell Foundation in 2012.
