Biographie
Antony Root is an acclaimed television executive and producer.
He began his career in theatre management before joining BBC Television's Drama Series and Serials Department as an Assistant Floor Manager. He later advanced to Script Editor, contributing to series such as Doctor Who (2005), The Chinese Detective (1981), and Strangers and Brothers (1984).
In 1984, Root was hired by Euston Films, a Thames Television subsidiary, as Development Executive, overseeing the development of new drama and film projects. His credits there included Capital City (1989), Bellman and True (1987), and the miniseries The Fear (1988), which he also co-produced.
Root joined Working Title Television in 1989 as Head of Production, where he developed and produced Lorna Doone (1990) for ITV, Derek Jarman's Edward II (1991) for BBC, and Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City (1993) for Channel 4.
In 1994, he became Head of Drama at Thames Television, executive producing John Schlesinger's Cold Comfort Farm (1995) for the BBC and developing Five's first drama series, Wing and a Prayer (1997), before moving to Granada Television as Head of Drama in 1996. There, he executive produced The Grand (1997) and Far from the Madding Crowd (1998), both for ITV.
In 1997, Root was appointed Granada's first executive to develop and produce drama for international broadcasters. As Head of International Drama, he supervised three A&E movies in the U.S.: Murder in a Small Town (1999) and The Lady in Question (1999), both starring Gene Wilder, and Dash and Lilly (1999), featuring Sam Shepard and Judy Davis. He also executive produced the Channel 4 miniseries Longitude (2000) for Granada Film.
In 1999, Root relocated to Los Angeles, taking on the role of SVP, Movies and Miniseries at Granada Entertainment USA. His executive producer credits during this period include The Great Gatsby (2000) for A&E and Princess of Thieves (2001) for ABC. In 2000, he was promoted to President of Granada Entertainment USA, overseeing all development and production, including TV movies such as Strange Relations (2001) (also known as My Beautiful Son) for Showtime/ITV, Second Nature (2003) for TNT, the second season of Beggars and Choosers (1999) for Showtime, and drama and comedy pilots for U.S. networks. After managing the company's shift from scripted to non-scripted programming and its merger with Carlton America, he stepped down from this role in 2003 but continued supervising scripted programming, serving as executive producer on the series Touching Evil (2004) for USA Network.
Root returned to the UK in 2005 as SVP, European Production for Sony Pictures Television, a post he held until December 2009. He was responsible for all development and production activities across Europe, managing wholly owned and joint venture operations in six countries.
From January 2010 to October 2011, he worked as an international consultant and executive producer. His projects included directing Industry Week at the RomaFictionFest in 2010 and 2011.
In October 2011, Root became executive vice-president of original programming and production at HBO Europe. He led HBO Europe's original programming division, overseeing teams in London, Copenhagen, and Madrid, as well as departments in Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, and Bucharest. He managed the creative, production, and financial aspects of all original programming and selected fiction and documentary projects for development and production. He was part of HBO Europe's senior management team, reporting directly to the CEO.
In 2020, Root was appointed Head of Original Production for WarnerMedia EMEA. In this expanded role, he continued overseeing HBO Europe's original programming and took on additional responsibilities for original productions commissioned by Turner channels in Spain, Germany, and France, as well as HBO Max across EMEA. He retired from this position in March 2023.
Productions associated with Root as producer or executive producer have received BAFTA, Peabody, and Banff awards, along with numerous regional honors within HBO Europe and HBO Max territories. They have also garnered nominations for European Film Awards, Primetime Emmys, Golden Globes, and Oscars.
