Biographie
Geraldine Brooks, a determined brunette with blue eyes and distinct, slightly angular features, was born on October 29, 1925, in New York City to Dutch parents. Her father, James Stroock, owned a prominent costume company, and her mother, Bianca, was a costume designer and stylist. Immersed in the theatrical world from an early age—starting dance at two and surrounded by relatives involved in theater, including an aunt who was a former Ziegfeld Follies performer and another who sang contralto at the Metropolitan Opera—Geraldine was naturally drawn to the stage. She attended Hunter Modeling School as a teenager and graduated from Julia Richman High School in 1942, where she served as president of the drama club. Her older sister, Gloria Stroock, also pursued acting, mainly on television.
In New York, Geraldine studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and the Neighborhood Playhouse before gaining experience in summer stock productions. In 1944, she joined the pre-Broadway tryout of "Follow the Girls," which moved to Broadway that May and ran for nine months. After playing Perdita in "A Winter's Tale" at the Theatre Guild, she was signed by Warner Bros. and made her film debut as a secondary female lead in the mystery thriller Cry Wolf (1947), starring Barbara Stanwyck and Errol Flynn. At this point, she adopted the stage name "Brooks," taken from her father’s costume company, instead of her original surname, Stroock. Portraying Flynn’s cool, scheming niece who troubles Stanwyck’s character, she added tension to the film. In her next film, Possessed (1947), she clashed again with a major star, Joan Crawford, showing greater emotional depth opposite Crawford’s intense character in this film noir.
Geraldine advanced to leading dramatic roles with Embraceable You (1948) alongside Dane Clark and portrayed the daughter of the real-life married couple Fredric March and Florence Eldridge in An Act of Murder (1948), a drama exploring euthanasia. However, her performances in the standard Warner Bros. B-western The Younger Brothers (1949) and her MGM loan-out in Challenge to Lassie (1949) were less memorable. Struggling to find a breakthrough with audiences, she tried several European film projects, including playing the younger sister of Anna Magnani’s character, but became disillusioned and returned to the United States.
Refocusing on stage and television, including a Broadway run in "Time of the Cuckoo" starring Tony winner Shirley Booth, Geraldine resumed acting studies and joined the Actor’s Studio in 1956, becoming a committed practitioner of the Method style. Despite this renewed approach, her film career stalled, with appearances in only two films over the following years: the harsh Street of Sinners (1957) and Johnny Tiger (1966). She gained more recognition through guest roles on popular TV series, notably Perry Mason (1957), The Defenders (1961), Bus Stop (1961)—for which she received an Emmy nomination—the Ironside pilot (1967), and the final episode of The Fugitive (1963). She was a regular on the short-lived Faraday and Company (1973) as Dan Dailey’s secretary and appeared in 1970s episodes of Kung Fu (1972), Cannon (1971), Barnaby Jones (1973), and McMillan & Wife (1971), the latter featuring her sister Gloria in a recurring role.
Her later theater work included a Tony-nominated performance in "Brightower" (1970), despite the show closing after one performance, and the role of Golde in the musical "Fiddler on the Roof." Her last film role was in the modest crime drama Mr. Ricco (1975) with Dean Martin. She had a brief stint as the matriarch in the comedic series The Dumplings (1976), a rare departure into comedy, and appeared in the stage production of Jules Feiffer’s "Hold Me!" in 1977, concluding a capable but somewhat unfulfilled career. She arguably deserved greater recognition, particularly in film. Geraldine was divorced from TV writer Herbert Sargent after a three-year marriage (1958–1961) and married author Budd Schulberg, famed for the screenplay of On the Waterfront (1954), in 1964. The couple settled in Los Angeles and established a writers’ workshop for underprivileged individuals. She also collaborated with Schulberg on Swan Watch (1975), a book about swans featuring her photographs, and wrote poetry for children, though she had none herself. Geraldine Brooks passed away in 1977 at 51 from a heart attack while battling cancer, leaving behind her husband, mother, and sister and depriving the entertainment world of a significant talent.
