Biographie
Composer Alexandra N. Pakhmutova was born on November 9, 1929, near Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in the Soviet Union. She started playing piano and composing music at a young age. Although World War II interrupted her education, Pakhmutova later moved to Moscow and was admitted to the Moscow Conservatoire's central musical school, an institution that produced renowned musicians such as Rostropovich, Kogan, and Rozhdestvensky. In 1953, she graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire and completed a postgraduate course in 1956 under the guidance of the distinguished composer Vissarion Shebalin.
Throughout her career, Alexandra Pakhmutova composed across various genres. Her works include pieces for symphony orchestra such as The Russian Suite, a trumpet concerto, the Youth Overture, and a concerto for orchestra; the ballet Illumination; music for children including cantatas, choir pieces, and numerous songs; as well as scores for films. The listed works represent only those compositions most frequently performed. Songs occupy a special place in her creative output, with over four hundred pieces to her name, including popular titles like The Melody, Tenderness, Hope, The Old Maple Tree, The Song of the Perturbed Youth, the Gagarin Constellation series, and Good-Bye Moscow—the farewell anthem for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Alexandra Pakhmutova is widely known and deeply respected by audiences. Her music has become an integral part of Soviet and Russian cultural history. She has received multiple Government Awards and State Prizes and served for many years as Secretary of the USSR and Russian Unions of Composers. In recognition of her contributions, minor planet #1889 was named after her, officially registered by the planetary center in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
