Biography

George Oppenheimer enjoyed a distinguished career as a playwright, screenwriter, and drama critic. His first role was as advertising publicity manager for the publisher Alfred A. Knopf. The son of a jeweller, Oppenheimer relocated to Hollywood in 1933, where he was hired by the writing duo George S. Kaufman and Robert E. Sherwood to finish the screenplay for Samuel Goldwyn's satirical comedy Roman Scandals (1933). Kaufman and Sherwood had created the original story but abandoned the project due to star Eddie Cantor's persistent interference with their script. Throughout the rest of the 1930s, Oppenheimer worked at MGM, often serving as a script doctor, resolving inconsistencies and enhancing his colleagues' work. He contributed to several major box-office successes, including Libeled Lady (1936), A Day at the Races (1937), and A Yank at Oxford (1938).

Following his wartime service with the South-East Asia Command (First Motion Picture Unit) in India, where he wrote, produced, and directed training films and documentaries, Oppenheimer returned to Hollywood. He co-wrote Adventures of Don Juan (1948) and penned twenty-five episodes of the popular comedy series Topper (1953). In 1955, he left the film industry to become a drama critic for Newsday in New York. Between 1970 and 1972, he served as president of the New York Drama Critics Circle.
