Biography
Rudolph Schildkraut (April 27, 1862 – July 15, 1930) was an Austrian actor known for his work in film and theatre.
Born in Istanbul, Ottoman Empire, to a Jewish family that operated a hotel, Schildkraut grew up in Brăila, Romania. He studied acting under Friedrich Mitterwurzer in Vienna and made his debut in the early 1880s in Sopro, with his first significant role occurring in 1885 in Krems.
In 1893, he relocated to Vienna to join the newly opened Raimund Theater, and in 1898, he moved to the Carl Theatre, where he notably portrayed Wurm in Love and Intrigue. He continued his career at the German Theatre in Hamburg in 1900 and then at the German Theatre in Berlin in 1905.
At the Berlin theatre, Schildkraut became a key member of Max Reinhardt's company. His portrayal of Shylock in Reinhardt's 1905 and 1913 productions of The Merchant of Venice was highly acclaimed, with Fritz Kortner describing it as a "monument to the art of acting." Other prominent roles included King Lear (1908), Mephisto in Faust I (1909), Muley Hassan in Friedrich Schiller's Fiesco (1909), the gravedigger in Hamlet (1909), and Peter Bast in Knut Hamsun's From the Devil Fetched (1914). Schildkraut made his first appearance in the United States during 1910–11.
In the early silent film era within the German Empire, Schildkraut gained recognition as a film actor, starring in several dramas. His final European film was a biography of Theodor Herzl, the founder of German Zionism, in which he played Herb Schildt, "The Struggling Israel." In 1920, he permanently moved to America and debuted in New York City in the play Silent Forces. Beginning in 1922, he also performed in English-language productions. In 1925, he established his own Jewish theatre in The Bronx.
During the last five years of his life, Schildkraut appeared in multiple Hollywood films. His most notable American film role was as the High Priest Caiaphas in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1927 production of The King of Kings, which significantly boosted his profile in the United States.
He was married to Erna (Weinstein), and they had a son, Joseph Schildkraut (1896–1964), who also became a well-known actor.
Rudolph Schildkraut passed away from a heart attack at the age of 67 in Los Angeles. He is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California. Coincidentally, his son died at the same age and from a heart attack as well.
