Biography
Robert Rockwell was an American actor known for his work on stage, film, radio, and television. He gained recognition for portraying the charming yet awkward biology teacher Philip Boynton in the radio and TV sitcom Our Miss Brooks alongside Eve Arden.
Born in Lake Bluff, Illinois, Rockwell earned a master's degree from the Pasadena Playhouse. During World War II, he served four years in the US Navy in Washington D.C. Although dramatic roles were often scarce, he built a prolific career spanning nearly five decades, appearing in over 350 television episodes. On stage, he performed opposite José Ferrer in the 1946 Broadway production of Cyrano de Bergerac and with Ginger Rogers in a 1960s San Diego production of Whitfield Cook's play A More Perfect Union. In 1952, he portrayed Jor-El, Clark Kent’s father, in the first Superman TV episode. Rockwell guest-starred in several Perry Mason episodes, including the 1959 episode "The Case of the Deadly Toy" as Dick Benedict, the 1961 episode "The Case of the Misguided Missile" as a court-martialed Air Force officer, and the 1962 episodes "The Case of the Lurid Letter" as principal Everett Rixby and "The Case of the Shapely Shadow" as murderer Cole B. Troy. He also appeared in the 1965 episode "The Case of the Candy Queen" as Ed Purvis.
During the 1959-1960 season, Rockwell starred in the ABC western series The Man from Blackhawk, playing Sam Logan, the lead investigator for the Blackhawk Insurance Company, tasked with uncovering fraudulent claims. He also portrayed Sam Thompson in Thompson's Ghost, Tom Bennett in The Bill Cosby Show, and Officer Russo in Adam-12.
In 1967, he appeared as a littering tourist in the Lassie episode "Lassie's Litter Bit," a notable installment that led to Lassie visiting the White House to meet First Lady Ladybird Johnson, who had featured the dog in her Keep America Beautiful campaign.
Rockwell was a founding member of the California Artists Radio Theatre. He took on lead roles in several anti-Communist films, including Republic’s The Red Menace, where he played a World War II veteran deceived by communists.
Later in his career, Rockwell appeared on Petticoat Junction, Growing Pains, and Beverly Hills, 90210. He also featured in over 200 commercials and voiceovers, most famously as the grandfather offering candy to his grandson in the 1995 Werther’s Original commercial.
