Biography
Neil Sandilands recently starred as General Abbot in Netflix’s acclaimed sci-fi/fantasy drama series "Sweet Tooth." His portrayal of the self-appointed general, who combines wit, intimidation, and eccentricity, earned him an Emmy nomination in 2023.
His recent film credits include "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" (2024), "London Calling" (2023), "Slay" (2023), "Wetiko" (2022), and the Academy Award-nominated "News of the World" (2020), directed by Paul Greengrass, where he starred as Wilhelm Leonberger opposite Tom Hanks.
A master of disguise, Sandilands portrayed the supervillain Clifford Devoe/The Thinker on The CW’s hit series "The Flash." His other television roles include the contentious mythological figure Titus in "The 100" (The CW), appearances in AMC/Sundance TV’s "Hap and Leonard" alongside James Purefoy, Michael K. Williams, and Christina Hendricks, as well as roles in "House MD," "The Americans," and "NCIS: LA." His extensive career began as a child actor in 1989.
Born in Randfontein, South Africa, Sandilands is considered one of the country’s most versatile actors, with a career spanning over three decades in film and television. He began acting professionally at age fourteen. He is the eldest of three children; his father was a mining professional and his mother a primary school teacher. He attended boarding school in Krugersdorp, where an encouraging teacher helped him land his first television role in "Meester" (The Master) in 1989.
Sandilands earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Rand Afrikaans University in 1996. He also received an honorary award from the university for his contributions to Arts & Culture, having won its Theatre Festival three consecutive years with plays he wrote and starred in. Additionally, he founded an International Film Festival.
In July 2022, Sandilands was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) for his role in DAM (Showmax). He also earned a South African Music Award (SAMA) nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Afrikaans Album for his debut album "Sangoma Sandilands & Jou Pa se Posse - Maanskyn." Music from this album featured as the soundtrack for M-Net Originals’ 2022 hit show "Desert Rose," in which he plays the troubled patriarch Freddy Fingers. His Afrikaans tracks "Woestynroos" and "Huistoe" have topped South African radio charts.
By 2000, Sandilands had become a household name in South Africa, notably for his role as Bart Kruger in the soap opera "7de Laan." Seeking an international career, he transitioned smoothly, debuting internationally in the 2003 arthouse film "Proteus," directed by Canadian John Greyson. Though active internationally, he continues to work often in South Africa, performing in his native Afrikaans as well as English.
As a musician, Sandilands has released two full-length albums and two EPs. His debut album "Sangoma Sandilands & Jou Pa se Posse - Maanskyn" (2021), performed in Afrikaans, reached Number 1 on iTunes South Africa within 24 hours. In 2023, he released his second album, "Allegaarkie vir 'n Askeet." Sandilands views his music as an artistic and literary tribute to his homeland and native language, considering it a passionate hobby. He collaborated with top South African musicians, contributing as writer, composer, lead vocalist, and ukulele player.
His accolades include the South African Academy of Arts and Sciences award for directing the 21-episode documentary "Impresario." In 2014, he won a Clio Award as a documentary director. As an actor, he has received numerous nominations and awards, including a prestigious "Fleur du Cap" for theatre.
Sandilands has played rugby across South Africa, the United States, England, Wales, and Ireland. He regards South Africa's 2023 Rugby World Cup victory—its fourth—as a miraculous event. He enjoys fishing and cites philosophers Camus, Wittgenstein, Deleuze, and Nietzsche (in reverse order) as key influences on his philosophical outlook. He aspires to portray Nietzsche or Meursault from Camus’ "L’Étranger."
He divides his time between South Africa and Los Angeles, California. Sandilands is represented by Stewart Talent and managed by Luber Roklin Entertainment in the USA, and by Figjam Artists Agency in South Africa.
