Biography

Fragiskos Manellis was a Greek comic actor renowned for his portrayals of kind-hearted buffoons, often performing alongside Takis Miliadis and Thanasis Vengos. He launched his stage career in 1931 with a debut in the musical theatre production of The Merry Widow. Subsequently, he toured widely with musical troupes across the Greek diaspora. Manellis made his film debut in 1943 with The Storm Is Over and appeared in a total of 56 films, frequently collaborating with director Vangelis Melissinos. Beyond acting, he contributed as a screenwriter, producer, and production manager. Audiences remember him for his lively humor and iconic roles as naïve or eccentric characters, including a notably risqué scene where he portrayed a dentist delivering suggestive dialogue. Celebrated for his comedic timing and dynamic stage presence, he was also known for flamboyant roles such as maharajahs. Offstage, Manellis was a bon vivant who enjoyed singing at a local taverna in Nikaia with his troupe and the orchestra of Giannis Laoutaris. He was married to actress Mary Nikolaidou, daughter of lyricist Eftyhia Papagiannopoulou, and their daughter, Rea Manelli, became a distinguished dancer and author.
