Biography

He spent his childhood in Peshawar, where he took on significant roles in theater. However, his main profession during his early years was tailoring. He actively participated in the Indian freedom struggle. After his father retired, the family relocated from Peshawar to Karachi. Following three years in prison in Pakistan, he moved to Bombay in 1949 after the Partition of India. He was associated with the theater group IPTA alongside Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi, both known for their Marxist views.

He began his Hindi film career quite late, at the age of 30, with Basu Bhattacharya's Teesri Kasam in 1946. He became known for portraying the gentle and oppressed elderly man in countless Hindi films. Among his favorite roles were those in Sholay and Shaukeen. Over his career, he has played a vast number of character roles, mostly positive, appearing in more than 125 films to date.
