Biography
Steven Borden, widely known by his ring name Sting, is a retired American professional wrestler and former bodybuilder whose career spanned five decades. Throughout that time, he secured a total of fifteen world championships and established himself as one of the most enduring and influential figures in professional wrestling history.
Borden gained prominence in the late 1980s, becoming the defining star of World Championship Wrestling (WCW) during its prime years. As the promotion’s heroic centerpiece and cultural icon, he earned the nickname “The Franchise of WCW.” Over 14 years with WCW and its predecessor, Jim Crockett Promotions, he captured multiple world titles, including six WCW World Heavyweight Championships, headlined more pay-per-view events than any other wrestler in the company’s history, and featured in the main event of WCW’s final Nitro episode in 2001. His feud with Hulk Hogan reached its peak at Starrcade 1997, which remains WCW’s highest-grossing event.
After WCW closed, Borden opted not to immediately join the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), later renamed World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002, despite WWF acquiring WCW in 2001. Instead, he continued his career internationally before becoming a key figure in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). Over more than ten years with TNA, he helped raise the promotion’s national profile, won multiple world championships, and became the only wrestler to hold the NWA, WCW, and TNA World Heavyweight Championships. In recognition of his contributions, he was the first inductee into the TNA Hall of Fame in 2012.
Toward the end of his career, Borden experienced a critically praised final run in All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he shifted into a special-attraction and mentor role, teamed with Darby Allin, and delivered notable performances well into his 60s. He officially retired from in-ring competition in 2024, concluding a career marked by longevity, adaptability, star power, and a unique ability to remain relevant across multiple wrestling eras.
