The playwright, born in Hyogo Prefecture in May 1975, spent his first to fourth grades in a Japanese school located in Hong Kong. Influenced by "The Imperial City Story," he aspired to be involved in Feng Shui in the future. He graduated from Ehime University's Faculty of Law and Literature, completing his master's course at Chiba University. In April 2002, he began working for Kodansha part-time before becoming an editor at the editorial department of Saizo. He received an invitation from Toshio Suzuki (nicknamed "Nayo") to work at Studio Ghibli in February 2005 after writing a critique article about them.

He was assigned to oversee Isao Takahata's new film after "Hohokekyo My Neighbor Yamada-kun." However, the screenplay for "Arrietty" was rejected, which led to the theme changing numerous times back to "Taketori Monogatari" as the original story before he left in August 2008. He attended a sponsored scenario course and departed from Studio Ghibli in November 2009 to explore his anime scriptwriting career. "Usagi Drop" is his most notable work, serving as a series.
