Biography
Lucas Tavernier is a multilingual actor fluent and regularly working in English, French, Italian, and Dutch. He also speaks Spanish fluently and has a good command of German. Additionally, he has basic knowledge of Arabic and Turkish and possesses a keen ear for phonetics, enabling him to learn lines in languages he has yet to master.
A versatile actor with extensive experience on stage and screen, he is a native Dutch (Flemish) speaker who graduated with distinction from K.U. Leuven, specializing in Romance languages philology. He is among the few non-native French speakers with stage experience performing alexandrine verse, having played l'Aiglon—the longest role in the French verse repertoire—over 100 times in Paris in Edmond Rostand’s play, directed by Marion Bierry. As a true all-rounder, he is also comfortable in other genres such as commedia dell'arte, which he is passionate about. He frequently conducts workshops, using his collection of more than ten masks to help actors explore their physical and vocal expressiveness. In Belgium, he has performed at venues including Bozar, Concertgebouw Brugge, Villers-la-Ville, Théâtre Royal du Parc, and Théâtre Royal des Galeries. Through his own production company, he has produced plays like Nathalie Sarraute’s "Pour un oui ou pour un non," Andrew Payne’s "Then What," and Mike Bartlett’s "Contractions," sometimes directing and sometimes performing, while personally handling Dutch translations.
In film, he works internationally and has been directed by notable figures such as George Clooney ("The Monuments Men") and Edoardo de Angelis ("Comandante"). He acted alongside Dieter Hallervorden in German productions. His collaborations with directors like Arjen Schotel ("Subhuman") and Gideon Van Eeden ("Entgen Luyten's Executioner") earned him accolades at Cannes Indies Shorts and IFF The Hague.
In classical music, he has performed with the Belgian National Orchestra under Jiri Rozen as a solo narrator in "Snegourochka," sharing the stage with soprano Jovita Vaska and tenor Igor Morozov in 2019. Grégoire Pont, responsible for live drawings during the performance, was so impressed he invited Lucas to return in 2023 for "The Nutcracker," the Belgian National Orchestra’s Christmas concert, directed by Ryan McAdams. Lucas carried the unique role of sole performing soloist alongside the orchestra and Pont’s artwork.
Physically adept, Lucas practices swimming almost daily and rides a motorcycle—having covered over 100,000 km on his BMW RT1200—to reach locations inaccessible by public transport. He is always ready for challenges on set, including horseback riding, underwater acting, and scenes involving being left in open waters. His other skills and hobbies include tango dancing, rowing, and cycling.
