The protagonist, Reverend Carl "Preach" MacNicol, faces his last shot at redemption and freedom, or failure and prison. As the Great Depression looms over Nineveh, Georgia, the townsfolk desperately need jobs, hope, and a new pastor. Preach, a former Army chaplain haunted by his past, lands a chance to lead the community upon his release from prison, thanks to an unknown benefactor. However, his whiplash temper lands him in trouble too often, and he must prove his worth by exhibiting hands-on compassion, delivering humble but potent sermons, and redirecting his violent outbursts.

Despite his unconventional methods, Doc Joe and his wife Maggie appreciate Preach's approach. Young Matthew, shunned by others, also takes a liking to him. But Constable Pless Crawford views the newcomer as a threat and plots his downfall. Preach's arrival splits the congregation, with Rebecca and her son among those who mistrust him. The reverend's journey to regain his faith while facing corruption, racism, and his inner demons, proves challenging. Failure could mean losing his newfound freedom and his new flock forever.
