Ahmed Atef "Dorra" is a talented and award-winning Egyptian filmmaker and writer, recognized as one of the innovative and prominent figures in Arab cinema and literature. His films have been showcased worldwide, earning critical acclaim and recognition. Born on April 17, 1971, he began his career as a professional child actor in Egyptian TV series from 1981 to 1986. He initially specialized in directing documentary films that boldly and poetically portray Egyptian reality. He gained prominence with his first fiction feature film, "Omar 2000," which was critically praised for its imaginative cinematic style. His second feature, the semi-musical "How to Let Girls Love You" (2003), achieved commercial success. In 2006, he founded his film production company, Egypt Films, and began producing and directing films such as "Demons of Cairo (Al Ghaba)" (2007) and the duo of films about the Arab Spring: "The Oriental Gate" (2013) and "Before the Spring" (2014). He then spent several years creating the TV series "Setat Adra (Femme Fatale)" (2016), which gained high visibility on six major Arab TV channels.
Over 25 years, Atef has forged a significant cinematic path, producing numerous films and television series that blend direct cinema with experimental approaches in a poetic exploration of reality. A central theme in his work is the search for lost humanity. His films have been selected and honored at major film festivals such as Rotterdam, Montreal World Cinema, Hamburg, Fespaco, San Francisco Arab, Burundi, Senegal, Rabat, Brussels, and Kiev. Among his notable awards are: the Movied Med for Best Mediterranean Script Promoting Mutual Understanding (2010), the European Union Prize for Best Film Promoting Freedom at Fespaco (2015), the Human Rights Prize at the Kelibia Festival in Tunisia (1991), Best Film at the New York Film Festival for Social Films (2015), Best Film at the Washington DC Independent Film Festival (2008), and Best Sound and Best Film Reflecting the City at Fespaco (2009).
In addition to filmmaking, he is a film critic and columnist for Al Ahram, as well as a poet and scriptwriter. He has published several books on cinema, including "Cinematograph Lumiere," and poetry collections such as "The Good Daughter." His philosophical thoughts will soon be published in a book titled "Catalogue of Life." He has worked as an expert on the Euro-Med Audiovisual Project and served as a jury member at film festivals in Tetouan, Tehran, Egypt, Clermont-Ferrand, Carthage, Milan, and the Cannes Film Festival in 2010.
