Charles Heung Wah-Keung is one of Hong Kong's most successful presenters and producers, yet also one of the most controversial figures due to his family's triad ties.
Heung began his career as an actor in Taiwan during the 1970s, primarily starring in Kung Fu action films, before transitioning into producing. In the 1970s, he married Betty Ting Pei, known for discovering Bruce Lee's body in her apartment. The marriage ended, and Heung later wed Tiffany Chen, originally from Taiwan.
Although the triad's influence in Hong Kong cinema was notorious, Charles sought to distance himself from his family's triad image by establishing a company as a safe haven. In 1984, he and his younger brother Jimmy Heung founded Win's Entertainment Ltd., which, alongside Golden Harvest, became one of Hong Kong's most successful film studios. Charles explained that he named the company Win's because "Every film is a battle."
Nearly every major Hong Kong star, except Jackie Chan, has worked with the Heungs. Jet Li, the leading martial arts star, began exclusively making films for Heung after his manager was murdered in April 1992. Cantopop singer and actor Andy Lau, along with prolific director Johnnie To, are also known for frequently collaborating with Heung.
Heung became both a producer and presenter (the Hong Kong equivalent of executive producer), while also gaining recognition as an actor. His most notable role was Lung Wu, the God of Gamblers' bodyguard, in God of Gamblers and its sequel, God of Gamblers Returns. He also appeared in spin-offs like God of Gamblers II and God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai, as well as other films such as Arrest the Restless, Prince of Temple Street, and Casino Raiders, which his brother co-directed.
The business partnership between Charles and Jimmy ended in 1992, as Charles felt Jimmy's negotiation style too closely mirrored that of a triad member. Charles considers Jimmy a "good triad," but it is widely believed Jimmy has since moved on and reportedly still runs the triad.
In 1992, Heung established China Star Entertainment Group, becoming its chairman and CEO. He appointed his wife Tiffany Chen as vice-chairman and administrative producer, despite her initial lack of industry experience. Today, she is regarded as one of Hong Kong's most respected film producers.
Heung acknowledges his family’s "Mafia background" but claims limited personal knowledge of it and has worked hard to overcome the associated stigma. He admits some may fear him, but emphasizes that his business approach relies on attracting top actors, actresses, and directors because they appreciate working with him. Despite ongoing rumors and accusations, Heung continues to avoid association with his family's triad past.
Beyond film production, Heung owns Top Ten, a nightclub in Beijing. In 2006, he and Tiffany announced plans to open a casino operated exclusively by China Star, while continuing to produce and distribute films, focusing on big-budget projects.
After parting ways with Jimmy, Heung closed Win's Entertainment Ltd. in 2000 and has since produced and distributed films under China Star Entertainment, now one of Hong Kong's most powerful and successful film companies. Heung remains active in producing and presenting films, concentrating on large-scale productions that appeal to wide audiences.
