Biografía
Ann Jellicoe was born on July 15, 1927, in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, and studied acting at London's Central School of Speech and Drama. She aspired to be an actress from the age of four, sparked by a dancing class, and was actively involved in theatrical performances during her school years.
An English playwright and theater director, Jellicoe is best known for her 1962 play "The Knack," which was adapted into the 1965 film The Knack... and How to Get It by director Richard Lester. She was also a pioneer of the "community plays" concept.
Her earliest attempts at writing involved creating dialogue for charades in her mind. At the Central School of Speech and Drama, a class in improvisation fueled her interest in crafting dialogue. She also encountered dramatist Christopher Fry, who spoke to students about playwriting.
After graduating, Jellicoe apprenticed as an actress in a repertory theatre in Aberystwyth, Wales. At a time when young actresses were expected to be attractive and not particularly interesting, Jellicoe was a plain girl and would later be part of the theatrical revolution influenced by Bertolt Brecht and the Berliner Ensemble. Friends helped her secure her first role in Aberystwyth, and afterward, she moved between acting roles and directing, also teaching acting.
Jellicoe founded and managed the experimental Cockpit Theatre at the Little Theatre Club. She began her playwright career with a one-act play showcasing her innovative theatrical ideas, included in a production she directed. Her breakthrough came with "The Sport of My Mad Mother," written for a 1955 competition for emerging playwrights sponsored by The Observer and judged by critic Kenneth Tynan. The play, which combined absurdist dialogue and physical theater to depict juvenile delinquents, won third prize. Its initial production was staged by the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, directed by company founder George Devine.
Devine aimed to create a new form of theater that challenged the class-bound complacency of West End commercial theater. He also directed John Osborne's Look Back in Anger (1956), the play that introduced the "Angry Young Man" and transformed English theater. Jellicoe’s work rejected traditional plot structures, embracing absurdity and unconventional techniques to engage audiences more directly, contrasting with Osborne’s more conventional narrative style. Though "The Sport of My Mad Mother" was a commercial failure and received mixed critical responses, this was not viewed negatively by Devine and the Royal Court, who opposed conventional theater and its traditional critics.
Working with Devine was enriching for Jellicoe, as he valued writers and believed they would revolutionize English theater. In 1955, he declared the English Stage Company a "writer's theatre." The Royal Court's writers group influenced Jellicoe's development, and she met her second husband, photographer Roger Mayne, there.
As the only woman in the Royal Court's Writers Workshop, Jellicoe continued writing plays focused on young people, gaining a reputation for understanding the younger generation. "The Sport of My Mad Mother" was restaged multiple times and revised by Jellicoe in 1962. That same year, she achieved her greatest success with "The Knack," staged at the Royal Court and starring Rita Tushingham, who also featured in the 1965 film adaptation.
Following the lukewarm reception of her first play, Jellicoe chose to write a sex comedy. Developed within the Royal Court's writers group, "The Knack" drew from her own life, with her partner Roger serving as the model for the character Colin. Directed by Mike Nichols, the play was a hit off-Broadway in New York in 1964, running for 685 performances.
Jellicoe did not replicate the massive success of "The Knack." Instead, the Royal Court produced her earlier play "The Rising Generation," written for the Girl Guides on teenage life, and "Shelley," a historical drama about the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. She later served as literary manager of the Royal Court from 1973 to 1975, promoting women playwrights, including Caryl Churchill.
She and Roger had two children, and her experience raising them influenced her to write several children's plays featuring child actors. These "Jellieplays" began in Dorset, where they relocated in the early 1970s to escape London's decline under Edward Heath’s government. The first children's play was intended for a small comprehensive school, but the usual teacher for school productions felt threatened and withdrew support. Through her involvement with South West Arts' Drama Committee, Jellicoe connected with the Medium Fair Theatre Company, which staged her play.
This production featured a cast of 80, including children from the originally hesitant school (the obstructing teacher had since left). This community play involved many local participants, not only actors but crew and others handling tasks such as selling refreshments during intermission.
In 1978, Jellicoe founded the Colway Theatre Trust, which evolved into the Claque Theatre, to advance community plays. These plays focus on specific groups and their issues, written and performed by locals within about 18 months. The Colway/Claque Theatre produced 30 community plays. This movement played a key role in increasing women's participation in theater, providing opportunities for women playwrights.
