Biografía
Ellia English, born as the middle child among nine siblings, is the daughter of Rev. Calvin English, a Baptist minister, and Ella Mae English, a domestic worker, in Covington, Georgia.
After graduating from high school ahead of schedule, Ellia enrolled at Clark College in Atlanta, majoring in music. She later transferred to Georgia State University to study speech and drama, eventually joining the ensemble at the renowned Alliance Theatre. There, her passion for acting and singing grew stronger, leading her to pursue a professional career. Determined, Ellia moved to New York City—the first in her family to venture so far from home—embracing the challenges and opportunities of the bustling city.
Ellia starred in numerous theatrical productions both On and Off Broadway, including "Harlem Nocturne," "Ain't Misbehavin," "Downhearted Blues" (The Bessie Smith Story), "Cotton Club Gala," "Dreamgirls," "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," "Colored Museum," "Romeo and Juliet," "Spunk," "Showboat," "Barnum," "Nunsense," and "One Mo Time," among others. She also performed as a soloist with the New York Community Choir and played the role of Sheila in the television pilot for "Fame."
Ellia held a series regular role as Helen King on "The Jamie Foxx Show." Beginning September 9, 2007, she appeared as Auntie Rae, a series regular on Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" on HBO. Her television credits also include roles on "Martin," "Empty Nest," "Sinbad," "The Five Mrs. Buchanans," "Love & War," "Get Smart," and "Thea." She featured in made-for-TV movies such as "The Innocent," "Based On an Untrue Story," and "The Barefoot Executive." On the big screen, Ellia appeared in "Good Luck Chuck," "Wildcats," "Woman Thou Art Loosed," "Sidewalk Stories," "Rain Without Thunder," and the upcoming "Semi-Pro."
Ellia English continues to thrive professionally as both an actress and singer.
