Biografía
Stevan Filipovic made his feature film debut with Shaitan's Warrior (Sejtanov ratnik, 2006), which he directed and co-wrote. The film blends elements from 1980s genre movies with modern fantasy cinema and was praised as a refreshing addition by critics and audiences alike. Shaitan's Warrior was showcased at numerous festivals in Serbia and internationally, including Peter Jackson's WETA Workshop in New Zealand, and won the Grand Prix at the Grossmann Fantasy Film Festival in Slovenia in 2006.
His follow-up film, Skinning (Sisanje, 2010), a political drama about far-right hooligans in Serbia, became the top domestic box office success that year, attracting over 80,000 viewers in Serbia. It earned major awards at all Serbian film festivals and was featured at more than 20 international festivals. The film was also distributed in the UK and Germany and served as the centerpiece of a broader campaign against violence and fascism in Serbia. Skinning was screened at the British Parliament and Oxford University.
Stevan edited Maja Milos's film Clip (Klip, 2012), which won the Tiger Award at Rotterdam Film Festival that year.
He co-wrote the screenplay for Dobra zena (A Good Wife) with Mirjana Karanovic; the film premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
Next to Me (Pored mene), his third directed and co-written film, premiered at the 62nd Pula Film Festival in Croatia, winning the Golden Arena award for best film in the international program. It was also screened at the 21st Sarajevo Film Festival, where it received the Young Audience Award, along with over 20 other international festivals. Next to Me garnered positive reviews from Hollywood Reporter, Screen Daily, Cineuropa, and Variety, and attracted more than 81,000 viewers in cinemas, becoming the number one box office hit of the season. It won major awards at all Serbian film festivals.
His upcoming project, Heart of Darkness, a Serbian/French/Belgian co-production with Stevan as writer and director, received financial support from the Creative Europe Media program for development.
In 2016, he served on the jury of the Pula International Film Festival.
He directed the pilot and three episodes of the Serbian remake of the WB television series ER.
Stevan contributes writings to Serbia's leading left-wing political web portal Pescanik and the newspaper Danas.
He received the Coalition Against Discrimination annual award in 2012.
He holds a professorship in Editing and Visual Effects at the Academy of Arts in Belgrade.
