Deeply passionate about Canadian independent cinema, she has worked both in front of and behind the camera on projects including: White Elephant, Nuur, Concrete Valley, Alterations, and Jean of the Joneses.
Kalyna is particularly interested in roles that balance vulnerability, intensity, awkwardness, and unpredictability, and gravitates toward stories that allow for emotional and creative risk-taking. Her background in comedy and performance training has strongly informed this approach to her work. She worked at The Second City Toronto for two years and graduated from their acclaimed Conservatory Program, while also training in Meisner technique through Terry Knickerbocker and studying Susan Batson’s Truth Approach.
In 2025, she wrote, directed, and acted in Revenge as part of the 48 Hour Film Project. She has also directed several short films often exploring experimental storytelling, first-person writing, and documentary filmmaking. A lifelong artist, Kalyna graduated from the Regional Arts Program at Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School with a focus in theatre and theatre production before earning a degree in Film Production from York University in 2021. Her studies focused primarily on documentary directing, editing, and production management, alongside a personal interest in experimental cinema.
In addition to her work in film, Kalyna writes poetry and has published two poetry collections, one of which she adapted into a Hamilton Fringe production titled Patchwork in 2024.
Kalyna comes from a strong athletic background and competed nationally in badminton, winning both the Under-18 Girls and Under-16 Girls Toronto city championships at just 14 years old. She also grew up playing select-level hockey and figure skating, and has trained across a wide range of sports including gymnastics, track and field, field hockey, cross country, table tennis, water skiing, wakeboarding, and skateboarding. She especially enjoys physically demanding performance work and is always excited to incorporate contortion and movement skills into her roles.
