Demet Akalın (born April 23, 1972) is a Turkish singer and former model. Since the mid-2000s, her popular songs have made her one of the most prominent figures in Turkish pop music.
Born in Gölcük, Kocaeli, Akalın initially pursued modeling, working for Nese Erberk's agency. During the 1990s, she also appeared in several films and TV series. Alongside modeling, she began performing in casinos and released her debut album, Sebebim, in 1996, which did not achieve commercial success. Her breakthrough came with the 2004 album Banane, with its lead single "Askin Acamadigi Kapi" winning the Turkey Music Award for Song of the Year. Kusursuz 19 (2006) earned a gold certification from Mü-Yap, and with the success of Dans Et (2008), she solidified her influence in Turkish pop music. Her 2015 album Pırlanta was the best-selling album in Turkey that year. Numerous songs like "Afedersin," "Mucize," "Toz Pembe," and "Hayalet" topped Turkish charts, while others such as "Tecrübe," "Çanta," "Olacak Olacak," "Sabika," "Ilahi Adalet," and "Ders Olsun" reached the top five.
Akalın is recognized by music critics for her unique style and has frequently appeared on magazine covers, often attracting tabloid attention. Since 2007, she has been involved in an intermittent feud with Hande Yener, which tabloids occasionally cover. After divorcing Oguz Kayhan (married 2006) and Önder Bekensir (married 2010), she wed Okan Kurt in 2012; their daughter Hira was born in 2014. The couple divorced in 2018. Throughout her career, Akalın has received two Golden Butterfly Awards, four Kral Turkey Music Awards, and numerous other accolades and nominations.
