Biografía
Alexandre Guerra, born in São Paulo in 1971, is a Brazilian composer whose work spans both film scores and concert music. He is a member of Sacem's "Sociétaires Professionnels" in France and the World Soundtrack Academy (WSA). Guerra graduated from Berklee College of Music with a focus on film scoring and studied harmony and composition in Brazil under Hans Koellheuter, a prominent figure in 20th-century Brazilian music. His diverse education has enabled him to master various styles and orchestral arrangements, evident in his compositions for film and the concert hall. Inspired by imagery and storytelling, many of his works draw from the literature of Eça de Queiroz and Alexandre Dumas, as well as the art of Matisse, Picasso, and Oswaldo Goeldi.
In recent years, Guerra's music has been performed by over 20 orchestras, including the Budapest Symphony, Montevideo Philharmonic, Porto Alegre Symphony, National Symphony, and Bucharest Symphony. In 2022 alone, 11 orchestras held 22 concerts featuring his works, including premieres such as "Divagações sobre a Noite" at Sala São Paulo with saxophonist Nailor Proveta and the São Paulo Chamber Soloists, and selections from the song cycle "O Mar como quem vem" at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, featuring mezzo-soprano Denise de Freitas. Recently, the Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná and the Teatro Guaíra ballet presented his piece "Lendas Brasileiras" to an audience exceeding 20,000, while the Orquestra de Câmara do Amazonas dedicated an entire program to his compositions.
In 2018, Guerra composed the symphonic overture "Guerreiras Amazonas" to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Santo André Symphony Orchestra. The following year, at the invitation of maestro Laércio Diniz, he served as resident composer for the João Pessoa Symphony Orchestra. He has released 27 albums, with 11 recorded by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, including "Fantasia for Guitar and Orchestra" featuring soloist Chrystian Dozza. His "Fantasia Rodin & Camille" for piano and string orchestra, featuring Fabio Martino, and the album "Ballet de Azul e Vento" were finalists in the 26th Brazilian Music Award.
In popular music, Guerra has worked as an arranger on projects with Carlinhos Brown & Bahia Symphony Orchestra and Léo Gandelman with the Symphonic Band Natal. He received the Sharp Prize for Best Arranger in instrumental music for Ed Ribeiro Lima's album "Girassol." His film career began in 1994 as an instrumentalist on Dolph Lundgren's film "Pentathlon." Currently, Alexandre Guerra has composed over 30 concert works, ranging from tone poems to opera, and more than 130 film scores. He has collaborated with directors such as Jayme Monjardim, Bruno Barreto, Pascal Cuissot, and Marcelo Machado on projects including "O Tempo e o Vento," "The Violin Teacher," "The American Guest" (HBO), "Blue Brazil" (Disney), and "Maysa" (Rede Globo).
