Bijaya Jena was born in Cuttack, Odisha, in eastern India, into a landed gentry family. Her father was an engineer. After finishing school, she studied acting at Pune Film School. Upon completing her studies, she traveled as a student to the former USSR. There, she met the legendary filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, who created a fictional role for her in his historical epic Razia Sultan, which was already in production. Following the commercial failure of Razia Sultan, she acted in several Odia films and sought to produce a low-budget film starring herself to avoid the casting couch prevalent in Bollywood. She collaborated with one of India’s finest scriptwriters, Bimal Dutt, and applied for state funding. As a young producer with limited funds, she assisted Dutt with the script and translated his dialogues into Odia, which greatly enhanced her understanding of the scriptwriting process. Dutt also introduced her to his private library, which contained works by Tagore, Tolstoy, Camus, Sartre, Kafka, Brecht, Zola, Chekhov, Hugo, Dostoyevsky, Turgenev, Flaubert, and others. When the funding was secured, Dutt, who was ill, suggested that Bijaya direct the film since she had a deep grasp of the script. Consequently, Bijaya became a director and made her debut film, TARA, in Odia in 1992, which won a National Award. She was nominated for Best Actress in India and at the Women’s Film Festival in France, where she competed alongside Agnieszka Holland, Sally Potter, Marian Hansel, Kristin Johannisdottir, and Penny Marshall. Her second directorial project was Abhaas (Prologue) in 1997, which featured the distinguished Hungarian filmmaker István Gaál as her script advisor. She then took a break to raise her daughter and write several scripts, followed by another hiatus to care for her ailing mother, who passed away in 2007. Currently, she is working on an Indo-French co-production adapted from an Indian classic and developing an English-language film set against the backdrop of Goa’s liberation from Portuguese rule.
