Renowned actress, comedian, singer, and dancer Vicki Lawrence has appeared on television and in nightclubs. Her career featured collaborations with popular performers such as Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, and Tim Conway.
Born Vicki Ann Axelrad in Inglewood, California, to Ann Alene (Loyd) and Howard Axelrad, a certified public accountant, Lawrence developed an early passion for singing and dancing. In high school, she was a cheerleader and was voted Most Likely to Succeed by her classmates. Between 1965 and 1967, she performed with the Young Americans musical group and appeared in The Young Americans, a documentary film that won an Academy Award.
Vicki Lawrence's career took a pivotal turn when she sent Carol Burnett a newspaper clipping highlighting their striking resemblance, seeking advice for a contest called the "Miss Fireball Contest" in California. Intrigued, Burnett contacted Lawrence and attended the event, hoping to find someone who could portray her younger sister on her variety show. Lawrence was selected for the role and mentored by Burnett, which propelled her career forward. She made her debut on the premiere episode of The Carol Burnett Show in the fall of 1967 and remained with the show for 11 years, earning one Emmy Award and five additional nominations. That same year, she enrolled at UCLA to study theater arts. To support her singing career, she also performed for U.S. troops in Vietnam alongside Johnny Grant.
Lawrence's music career reached its height in 1973 when she received a gold record for her international hit "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia." In 1974, she married CBS makeup artist Al Schultz, with whom she has two children. After The Carol Burnett Show concluded, she starred in her own comedy series, Mama's Family, which included Dorothy Lyman, Ken Berry, Beverly Archer, and Betty White, with Carol Burnett making frequent guest appearances. Following the sitcom, Lawrence transitioned into hosting television shows.
She became the first successful female game show host with Win, Lose or Draw and also hosted her own talk show, Vicki!, which aired from 1992 to 1994. Beyond television, her stage credits include Carousel, Hello Dolly, Annie Get Your Gun, No, No, Nanette, and My Fat Friend. In the 1990s, she appeared in I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road. Her autobiography, Vicki! The True Life Adventures of Miss Fireball, chronicles her experiences in music, theater, and television. Today, she dedicates much of her time to delivering motivational speeches for women's groups and charitable organizations.
