Cynthia Adler is an actress, award-winning socio-political satirist, and one of America's leading voiceover artists. She is married to actor John Henry Cox. Her notable credits include Knightriders, Bananas Is My Business, The Actress, Love, American Style, and others. She provided most of the female voices in the animated feature Fantastic Planet and portrayed 'Lee's Mother' in the Showtime series HAPPYish. Her narration work includes HBO's Real Sex and numerous documentaries, as well as projects for Discovery Channel, PBS, and American Masters. Cynthia’s voice can also be heard in The Coneheads cartoon, Marilyn in Manhattan TV documentary, Brain Games series, and as the narrator for America Undercover.
Cynthia has voiced many national commercials for brands such as Revlon, Mercedes Benz, Pampers, McDonald's, Estee Lauder, Delta Airlines, and Chiquita Banana. Her original poem "My Face," accompanied by her voice, was featured in a national Oil of Olay ad campaign that aired for nearly two years.
While much of Cynthia's career has been behind the microphone, her Gemini nature has led her to explore various creative avenues. Her cabaret acts, featuring sharp parodies on topics like the environment, corporate takeovers, and plastic surgery, were highly successful. These performances evolved into a nine-character, one-woman show titled Downloaded...and in Denial, which received rave reviews in New York and the Northeast, was highlighted in a half-page New York Times article by Chris Hedges, and was named Best Show of the Year at the Big Arts Festival in Sanibel, Florida.
As a teenager, Cynthia contributed to Mad Magazine, though much of her work was considered too provocative to publish. She later became a writer and Contributing Editor for Status, Celebrity, and Film International magazines, all of which unfortunately ceased publication. Her comedy writing attracted New York ad agencies, who hired her to craft copy for numerous TV commercials.
Cynthia has also spent considerable time dubbing leading roles in foreign films, including Swept Away and Seven Beauties by Lina Wertmueller, 1900 by Bernardo Bertolucci, and Scenes From a Marriage by Ingmar Bergman. Her on-screen appearances include Che Cosa? for Italian television, Hangin' Out With Ceci for ABC Afterschool Special, George Romero's Knightriders, and Bananas Is My Business on PBS.
Trained by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, Cynthia traveled to London to work on the Muppet Shows. Her portrayal of a duck character remains celebrated by devoted Muppet fans.
As a writer, actress, and socio-political satirist, she has performed her satirical characters for prominent national organizations such as the Social Venture Network, The Open Center, Events of the Heart at the Geffen Theatre in LA, and created a satire of a "One Percenter" interviewed at Zuccotti Park during Occupy Wall Street.
An ardent environmental activist, Cynthia served as Co-Chair of the Environment Committee for The Creative Coalition for seven years. Collaborating closely with Christopher Reeve and Robert Kennedy Jr., she played a key role in improving New York City's drinking water quality. She has served on the Board of Directors of Inform and currently sits on the Board of Energy Vision, an environmental and alternative fuel research organization dedicated to ending dependence on oil.
