Michael Schroeder, an award-winning writer and director, creates films that captivate audiences with both entertainment and emotional depth. His work combines engaging characters, visual storytelling, and memorable moments that linger long after viewing.
His notable feature MAN IN THE CHAIR, starring Christopher Plummer, demonstrated his talent for stylishly blending genres. The film tackled themes of ageism and societal neglect, winning Best Picture at the Santa Barbara, Stony Brook, Kent, and Heartland Film Festivals, along with nominations and honors from Berlin (Crystal Bear), Seattle, Palm Beach, AFI-Dallas, MethodFest, and many others. Christopher Plummer described his role as Flash as the performance of a lifetime. Critic Rex Reed of the New York Observer hailed it as "a modest but intelligent feel-good movie with a spectacular performance by Christopher Plummer and wise, deeply affecting writing and direction from Michael Schroeder. Since joining the Directors Guild of America in 1982, Schroeder has contributed to over 50 feature films, covering narrative, action, and commercial projects. His early career as a First Assistant Director on 30 feature films included titles like THE BIG EASY and SHY PEOPLE, plus numerous commercials and music videos. His talent scouting helped launch the first film roles for Angelina Jolie and Meg Tilly.
As an action director, Schroeder has received international acclaim, including Hollywood’s Greatest Stunts award for the explosion sequence in THE GLASS CAGE (vimeo.com/23546949) and widespread praise for the white-water scenes in DAMNED RIVER, filmed on Zimbabwe’s Zambezi River (vimeo.com/156124027).
In 2007, he founded ELBOW GREASE PICTURES, an independent production company based in Venice, California (elbowgreasepictures.net).
Schroeder also served as a Professor of Film Directing at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts from 2001 to 2002, mentoring a new generation of filmmakers.
Originally from Idaho, Schroeder has resided in Los Angeles since 1980. He is married to filmmaker Sharon Cingle and is the father of four children: Taber, Rachel, Hillary, and Milo. When not working on set, he enjoys golfing and playing tennis at Ocean View Courts in Santa Monica.
