Ji-Tu Cumbuka is one of the many African American actors who overcame significant obstacles during the 1960s. Born on March 4, 1940, in Montgomery County, Alabama, during a time of oppression, Ji-Tu refused to let societal norms deter him from his passion. Opportunities for African American actors in the 1940s and 1950s were limited, often restricted to roles as maids or caricatures in minstrel shows. Growing up in a racially divided society, Ji-Tu embodied the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement.
He watched his first movie, "Shane," at age twelve, sparking his ambition to become an actor. Despite facing discouragement—from teachers mocking his dreams to his father, a Baptist minister, who viewed acting as "the devil's work"—he was inspired by his mother’s faith that with God’s help, he could achieve any goal. Determined, he left home for New York. After enduring several challenging years, he joined the Army, where he excelled in football and track, earning All-Army honors in both sports. Though offered multiple college scholarships, he chose to attend Texas Southern University. Following his time there, he moved to California to further pursue his acting career. While acting, Ji-Tu continued his education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and a Master’s Degree in Cinematography.
After three years of acting classes, community plays, and workshops, he secured his first leading role in the film "Uptight," directed by the late Jules Dassin. Cumbuka is best known for his roles in films such as the landmark "Roots," "Harlem Nights," "Brewster's Millions," "Mandingo," and "Bound for Glory," along with appearances in more than thirty other movies. On television, he earned acclaim for parts in popular series including "Knots Landing," "The A-Team," "The Dukes of Hazzard," "Walker, Texas Ranger," and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." In total, Ji-Tu has appeared in over one hundred films and TV shows.
