Bill Bennett's film career spans over forty years. As a producer, director, and writer, he has created seventeen feature films along with several documentaries. His work in feature production and direction has earned him two Australian Film Institute Awards for Best Film and Best Director, with an additional twelve AFI nominations. Earlier in his career, he won two Logie Awards for his journalism and documentary efforts.
Bill began his film journey in 1972 after leaving medical school at Queensland University to join the Australian Broadcasting Commission. He spent a decade working as a journalist before transitioning to producer/director roles on programs such as Four Corners, This Day Tonight, and the acclaimed documentary series A Big Country.
In 1982, he produced his first independent dramatized documentary, which aired on both the ABC and BBC and won the Sydney Film Festival Award for Best Documentary.
A few years later, he directed his first feature-length film, A Street To Die, earning AFI nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. The film also won Best Picture at the prestigious Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
Bill has had two films—Backlash and Malpractice—selected for the Cannes Film Festival, four films screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, and his Outback film noir Kiss or Kill shown at the New York Film Festival. Numerous other films have been featured at major festivals worldwide. His works have been distributed by many major Hollywood studios. International retrospectives of his films have been held in the US, Germany, and India, and the New York Museum of Modern Art has showcased his movies. He has received multiple Best Film awards at various international festivals.
In 2017, Bill wrote, directed, and produced a feature-length theatrical documentary on intuition titled PGS - Intuition is your Personal Guidance System, which received acclaim in cinemas across Australia and the US. Two years later, he released another feature-length theatrical documentary, Facing Fear, focused on the subject of fear, which also garnered praise in Australian and US cinemas. These documentaries are the first two in a planned four-film "Journey" series, with upcoming films on Hope and Death.
In 2024, Australian distributor Maslow Entertainment released Bill's seventeenth feature film, The Way, My Way. Within six weeks, it became the second highest-grossing Australian independent film of the year. Based on Bill's bestselling memoir of the same name, the film recounts his experience walking the renowned Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route about ten years earlier.
The Way, My Way is scheduled for theatrical release in the US and Europe in spring 2025.
