London-born actor Christopher Robbie graduated from RADA in 1960 and made his stage debut that same year with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. He spent several seasons in repertory theatre before rejoining the RSC ensemble in 1991. His notable roles since then include King Lear, the Duke of Venice in The Merchant of Venice, and Vincentio in The Taming of the Shrew. From 1999 to 2010, Robbie toured annually with his one-man show, Charles Darwin: Beyond Paradise: The Wildlife of a Gentle Man, which premiered at the Salisbury Playhouse in September 1998. Writing under the pen name James Alan, he authored the play The Sirens of Eroc (2001), in which he co-starred with his wife, actress Bridget Wood, whom he married in 1964.
Robbie began his screen career in 1964, portraying a variety of clerics, newscasters, politicians, and judges in episodic television. He is perhaps best known for his role as the Cyber-Leader in the Doctor Who serial The Revenge of the Cybermen (1975). His sporadic guest appearances include The Avengers (1961), Paul Temple (1969), UFO (1970), Dempsey and Makepeace (1985), and One Foot in the Grave (1990). During the 1980s, alongside acting, he worked as an announcer for Associated-Rediffusion, Thames, and Anglia TV. In December 1981, he presented Southern Television’s final broadcast, And It's Goodbye from Us (1981).
Robbie retired from acting in 2013. Beyond stage and screen, he is recognized as an accomplished photographer, having held successful exhibitions of his work.
