Born in the summer of 1971 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, DeWitt Jones has been passionate about the arts from an early age. That passion was ignited and solidified in the summer of 1977, when his mother took him to see George Lucas' Star Wars. The cinematic spectacle left a lasting impression and became the catalyst for his lifelong journey into filmmaking.
Determined to learn the craft, DeWitt's first stop was the local library, where he immersed himself in the works and philosophies of legendary filmmakers such as Oscar Micheaux, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Brian De Palma, Gordon Parks, Melvin Van Peebles, and Rod Serling. These visionaries became his mentors on paper, shaping his voice and perspective as a filmmaker.
After completing film school and balancing life and family, DeWitt landed his first role in the industry as the cinematographer on director Bobby Peoples' feature drama The Black Love Stories Vol. 1. This opportunity paved the way for his directorial debut with Night of the Jackals, an action-horror film showcasing his sharp wit, intelligent storytelling, and sly sense of humor. Though not a commercial hit, the film received critical acclaim for its originality and direction.
Driven by creative independence, DeWitt parted ways with TPN to launch his own production company, Steel City Pictures. Under this banner, he released the psychological Christian sci-fi thriller anthology Uncanny, which he wrote, directed, and produced. The film received critical praise for its bold, abstract style reminiscent of Twin Peaks, though its unconventional approach polarized some viewers. Nevertheless, Uncanny laid the foundation for a trilogy, culminating in what many consider his most ambitious and accomplished work to date: IMagine.
A mind-bending psychological thriller, IMagine was designed to challenge and disorient audiences, trapping them in a world ruled by fear and imagination. Drawing inspiration from the suspenseful mastery of Hitchcock and De Palma, DeWitt created a breakout hit lauded for its unpredictable narrative, visual intricacy, and emotional depth. Critics have called IMagine "a firestorm of unpredictable loops and swirls," marking a high point in his career.
