Writer and Director Peter Gould grew up in the Chelsea neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, where he was expelled from several elite, non-conformist private schools. After earning a B.A. in English from Sarah Lawrence College, Peter became a prominent figure in the New York indie film scene, taking on a variety of roles in projects ranging from the retro punk angst of Scott and Beth B. to the lively exploitation style of Troma ("The Toxic Avenger"). Eventually, he moved into the somewhat more respectable world of television commercials but soon realized he wanted to create his own films. He relocated to the West Coast to join the USC Graduate Production program, dedicating himself to writing and directing.
Drawing on his unhappy prep school experiences, his love of Luis Buñuel films, and a fascination with women's feet, Peter wrote the short film script DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS. The story follows a self-loathing foot fetishist working as a department store trainee who must face his deepest fears and desires when assigned to the ladies' shoe department. This project seemed destined for Peter, whose earliest memory involved spying on his first-grade teacher’s toes during reading circle—an act that eventually led to his expulsion from second grade.
Through determination and strategic effort, Peter convinced a skeptical USC faculty committee to approve the unconventional film concept. Out of hundreds of scripts, DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS was chosen as one of the year's major graduate productions, and Peter earned the rare opportunity to direct his own screenplay. The completed film received numerous accolades, including the Nissan Focus Award and the Cine Golden Eagle. Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times praised it for its "delicious sense of dark humor... painfully funny!"
Peter and his film represented USC at the CILECT Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, where it won the Audience Award. The film was also uniquely screened on Czech television and parodied in other student films. Additionally, DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS won at the Hiroshima International Film Festival and was featured on Entertainment Tonight. Following this wave of recognition, Peter became the industry's "flavor of the month," with competing talent agencies vying to represent him and an appearance in PREMIERE magazine. However, overwhelmed by offers for low-budget, low-concept projects, Peter chose to focus on screenwriting, producing a series of highly regarded, unconventional scripts.
His writing credits include DOUBLE DRAGON, a $20 million action film that helped launch the video-game movie trend. Peter has also directed music videos and created a best-selling children's home video. For the past five years, he has taught film production in the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC's School of Cinema-Television and has also taught at the Art Center in Pasadena. Currently, Peter is preparing to direct his first feature film, a dark, quirky comedy set to begin shooting in early 1997.
