Carolina Giammetta is an award-winning writer and director celebrated for her deep engagement with actors, innovative visual storytelling, and the unique energy and collaboration she fosters on set. Later this year, she will direct all eight episodes of Season 2 of *Suspect* starring Anne Marie Duff for Channel 4. Last year, she directed the entire second season of *Before We Die* for Channel 4, featuring Lesley Sharp, Vincent Regan, Steve Trossaint, and Patrick Gibson. The first season ranked as the third highest-rated show on Channel 4 last year.
In 2021, she directed the four-part drama *Hollington Drive* for ITV/West Road, written by Sophie Petzel (Writers Guild Award winner), starring Anna Maxwell Martin, Rachel Stirling, Rhashan Stone, Jim Howick, and Jonas Armstrong. The series received strong ratings and critical acclaim, being named Drama and Pick of the Week across major broadsheets.
In 2020, she directed her first authored project, the four-part drama *The Drowning* for Channel 5 (Unstoppable Film & TV, Element Pictures, ALL3Media), starring Jill Halfpenny, Rupert Penry-Jones, and Jonas Armstrong. It became Channel 5’s biggest drama to date.
Her previous credits include directing two feature-length episodes of *Vera* (“Cold River” and “The Escape Turn”) for ITV starring Brenda Blethyn, which were recognized as Drama of the Week and Choice by Radio Times and major broadsheets. She also directed the feature-length season opener of *Agatha Raisin* for Sky One, featuring Ashley Jensen, Mathew Horne, and Jamie Glover, and co-led the first series of *Shakespeare & Hathaway* for BBC One starring Mark Benton and Jo Joyner, which was nominated for a Broadcast Award for Best Drama. Carolina began her television career directing episodes of *Doctors* and *Casualty* for BBC Drama.
Her feature film *Pizza Face*, produced by Alexandra Blue (Bluebird Productions) and nominated for the IMDb 'Script to Screen' award, is currently in development with the BFI. Her award-winning, BAFTA-longlisted short and pilot for *Pizza Face*, *Holy Cannelloni*, was funded by BFI Network and Creative England.
Carolina has written and directed numerous acclaimed short films that have been selected for international film festivals and won multiple Best Short Film awards worldwide, including SXSW, LSFF, EIFF, ASFF, BFI Loco, and Austin Film Festival. These include *Papa*, *Ornamental*, and the highly praised *I Don’t Care* (Film London), starring Billie-Jo Bailey, Andrea Lowe, and Jo Hartley, which received Vimeo Staff Pick, Short of the Week, and Daily Picks on FilmShortage. The multi-award-winning *Night Armour*, starring Elizabeth Berrington and Dan Fredenburgh, premiered at BFI Loco, was selected by over 30 festivals globally, and won Best Short Film at Broad Humor in LA, recognized by MovieMaker as the Best Female Comedy Film Festival worldwide. *Man Up*, starring Nick Moran, was a finalist and winner in the Reed Film Competition and Virgin Media Shorts, competing against over 1,000 films, and was screened in cinemas across the UK and on various movie channels.
In addition, Carolina created and established Shortflix with Creative England, Sky Arts, and BFI ScreenSkills, a new initiative aimed at discovering, training, and supporting emerging filmmaking talent from socially diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. The program produces five short films showcased on Sky One, bringing fresh voices to the screen. Ambassadors include Riz Ahmed, Zawe Ashton, Ellie Kendrick, and Joe Cole. She also co-led Playing Up for the National Youth Theatre for three years, training young actors from underrepresented backgrounds.
Carolina is an alumna of several talent development programs, including the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) Talent Lab, Screen Yorkshire’s Triangle Programme, the BFI/LFF Think Shoot Distribute Development Scheme, and The Bureau SOS script development scheme for her feature *Pizza Face*.
