He studied communication, film, and semiotics at Universidad Iberoamericana, learning from notable instructors like Guillermo Arriaga and Carlos Carrera. At the postgraduate level, he co-produced thesis projects at the CONACULTA Cinematographic Training Center. His professional career began as assistant director on the multi-award-winning film "Rojo Amanecer" (Jorge Fons, 1989), which earned 11 Ariel awards and the special jury prize at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain. In 1995, he again assisted his father on the acclaimed film "El Callejón de los Milagros," which won over 40 international awards, including at Berlin, Valladolid, and Chicago. He has written and directed several short films, including "Benjamín," which won best short film at the Images du Nouveau Monde festival in Quebec, Canada. Throughout his career, he has directed prominent actors such as Héctor Bonilla, Gonzalo Vega, Evangelina Elizondo, Silverio Palacios, Evangelina Martínez, Jesús Ochoa, and Diego Luna. He also directed Juan Gabriel’s musical concert "Juntos Otra Vez" at the Degollado Theater in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and was part of the directing team for soap operas at Televisa and TV Azteca. In 1990, Julio Fons began working as an advertising director at production companies Cine 16 and Zeta Film, owned by Alejandro González Iñárritu, collaborating with him for over two years. He has directed hundreds of commercials for international agencies such as Walter Thompson, Olabuenaga Chemistri, and Ogilvy across Mexico, Central America, and the United States. He has produced documentaries and educational series nationwide and worked as a director at LucíaFilms, Michel Franco’s production house, collaborating with him for more than a decade. He is currently completing his first feature film "Vivir," with the chapter "Vejez" focusing on the issue of missing persons in Mexico. Additionally, he is producing the "Anuario Bio Cultural de México" and serves as the creative director for various cultural projects and television series. His most recent work as producer, director, and photographer includes the international series "The Spice Trails Latinoamérica" (2023) and the upcoming international series "EAT" (2025), which explores the reasons behind our food choices and was filmed in countries such as India, Japan, Chile, Guatemala, Indonesia, and Mexico.
