Queen Marie of Romania was born Princess Marie of England on October 29, 1875. She was the daughter of Albert, Queen Victoria's son, and his wife Marie, the daughter of Czar Alexander II of Russia.
She spent much of her early life in England, but due to her father's naval career, she moved from England to Malta and later to Germany during her childhood. She grew up surrounded by her brothers, sisters, and numerous cousins. As a teenager, her cousin, the future King George V of England, visited her in Malta. During these visits, they fell in love and wished to marry, but their mothers opposed the idea.
After rejecting the possibility of her nephew becoming her son-in-law, Marie's mother arranged for her to marry Grand Duke Ferdinand, heir to the Romanian throne. Soon after the wedding, they moved to Romania, living in a castle with Ferdinand's uncle, King Carol I. Marie soon became pregnant and gave birth to the future King Carol II. Over time, she had six children, some of whom were not Ferdinand's, and several of whom married the offspring of Marie's cousin Sophie, Queen of Greece.
Life in Romania was challenging for Marie. She often clashed with Ferdinand and his uncle, and Ferdinand's aunt Elisabeth (known as Carmen Sylvia) treated her harshly, even taking her children away. To find relief, Marie frequently traveled abroad, visiting her mother and sisters in Germany or her cousins, Czar Nicholas II and Czarina Alexandra, in Russia. She made these trips many times, including twice during pregnancies of children fathered by men other than Ferdinand.
Matters did not improve after Ferdinand ascended the throne in October 1914. World War I had begun in Europe, causing hardship for Marie and her family, whose members were scattered from Spain to Russia. The post-war years were also difficult, with her son and then grandson on the throne. As World War II approached in 1938, Marie's health deteriorated due to internal hemorrhages, leading to her death on July 18 of that year.
