Frequently hailed as the First Lady of German cinema, Ruth Leuwerik reached the height of her fame in the 1950s, starring alongside leading male actors of the post-war period such as Dieter Borsche, Hannes Messemer, Curd Jürgens, and O.W. Fischer. She demonstrated her versatility by portraying both glamorous heroines and strong, independent women in high-quality films, consistently directed by renowned filmmakers like Wolfgang Liebeneiner, Robert Siodmak, and Helmut Käutner.
Ruth developed a passion for acting at the age of ten after seeing a film featuring Greta Garbo. Her father, Julius Martin Leeuwerik, a prosperous merchant, was able to provide her with private acting lessons after she was initially turned down by Berlin's top acting school. Undaunted, Leuwerik made her stage debut in 1943. However, the war severely limited her career opportunities. From 1947 to 1949, she secured steady theater roles in Bremen and Lübeck. In 1950, she caught the attention of film audiences with the vacation comedy Dreizehn unter einem Hut. Her success was swift, and she soon shifted her focus from theater to film.
Between 1950 and 1963, Ruth Leuwerik starred in 28 films, most of which were box-office hits. Her work spanned from traditional melodramas like Die große Versuchung (1952) and Geliebte Feindin (1955) to prestigious productions such as Rosen im Herbst (1955), where she played Effie Briest based on Theodor Fontane’s novel, and Ludwig II: Glanz und Ende eines Königs (1955), portraying Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Her diverse roles included aristocratic heroines, strong bourgeois mothers, victims of fate, and committed professional women. She portrayed Maria von Trapp in The Trapp Family (1956), long before the famous musical adaptation with Julie Andrews. She also delivered a powerful performance as a priest’s daughter on trial for her husband’s murder in A Matter of Minutes (1959). Another notable role was as Dr. Hanna Dietrich, caring for 300 German POWs in a Siberian concentration camp, in the post-war drama Taiga (1958), which earned her the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco Film Festival. One of the pinnacles of her career was Liebling der Götter (1960), a biographical film about the tragic actress Renate Müller. Voted Germany’s most popular actress by Bravo, the film and television magazine, Leuwerik received four Bambi Awards in 1953, 1960, 1961, and 1962. In 1960, she became the first German actress to perform at a Royal Performance in London.
Starting in 1964, after declining an offer from Hollywood, Leuwerik gradually retreated from public life, limiting her appearances to occasional television guest roles. Unlike many screen icons, her personal life remained free of scandal. Her second husband was the renowned German opera singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Ruth Leuwerik passed away in Munich in January 2016 at the age of 91.
