Michael Bonfiglio is an Emmy-winning director, producer, writer, and camera operator.
His acclaimed film MAY IT LAST: A PORTRAIT OF THE AVETT BROTHERS, created in collaboration with Judd Apatow, premiered at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, winning the 24 Beats Per Second Audience Award. This documentary was among the highest-grossing of the year and made its television debut on HBO.
Bonfiglio and Apatow also co-directed the 2016 Emmy-nominated DOC & DARRYL for ESPN's 30 FOR 30 series, exploring the turbulent lives of baseball players Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden. Bonfiglio’s earlier 30 FOR 30 project, YOU DON'T KNOW BO: THE LEGEND OF BO JACKSON, remains ESPN’s highest-rated documentary.
He directed David Letterman's Emmy-nominated Netflix series MY NEXT GUEST NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION, marking Letterman’s return to television after retirement, which premiered with President Barack Obama’s first major TV interview post-presidency.
In 2017, Bonfiglio directed JERRY BEFORE SEINFELD for Netflix, the comedian’s first stand-up special in over ten years. The special blended stand-up with scripted and unscripted segments about Seinfeld’s early life and career, earning Bonfiglio a Primetime Emmy nomination.
Recently, Bonfiglio earned a Primetime Emmy as co-executive producer of Apatow’s THE ZEN DIARIES OF GARRY SHANDLING, which received two additional Emmy nominations.
He also directed FROM THE ASHES, a collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies on the U.S. coal industry, which premiered at the 2017 TriBeCa Film Festival and aired globally on National Geographic. PARIS TO PITTSBURGH, another Bloomberg Philanthropies and National Geographic project co-directed with Sidney Beaumont, was set for release in December 2018. Bonfiglio directed and co-produced the Emmy-nominated series OPRAH'S MASTER CLASS, helming 30 episodes over five seasons. Other directing credits include 9 DAYS AND NIGHTS OF ED SHEERAN, an intimate look at the British singer-songwriter during the completion of his album X; the five-part series VISIONARIES: INSIDE THE CREATIVE MIND for OWN; the Sundance Channel series ICONOCLASTS; and the MTV special SUMMIT ON THE SUMMIT.
His producing and additional credits include the Oscar-nominated PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY, PARADISE LOST 2: REVELATIONS, CRUDE, GRAY MATTER, and the Emmy-winning 10 DAYS THAT UNEXPECTEDLY CHANGED AMERICA.
