Mario Lanza's life tragically mirrors a grand Shakespearean drama. His story is remarkable: a fiery Philadelphia youth with a voice surpassing Enrico Caruso's aimed to become the greatest dramatic opera singer ever. However, MGM chief Louis B. Mayer and Hollywood's allure diverted him, transforming him into a striking box-office star with a 50-inch chest, hosting a national radio show, gracing the cover of TIME Magazine in 1951, and reigning over the pop record scene. Long before Elvis Presley and The Beatles, he toured the country relentlessly, becoming a true "superstar" before the term existed and the first singer to earn gold records in both classical and popular music.
His MGM triumph, The Great Caruso (1951), was the highest-grossing film worldwide that year. Lanza's voice was so extraordinary—powerful, golden, dazzling—that Arturo Toscanini hailed it as the "voice of the century." Admirers spanned the globe, including Serge Koussevitzky, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Tito Schipa, Renata Tebaldi, Sophie Tucker, Kirsten, Albanese, and many others. His voice has been described as "Northern Lights in a Throat," conveying unmatched sensitivity, passion, and vulnerability.
In 1952, during The Student Prince (1954) production, MGM fired Lanza after director Curtis Bernhardt criticized the intense passion in one song on the soundtrack. This marked the start of his career's irreversible decline. The emotional blow of the "The Student Prince" debacle and losing his MGM contract led to struggles with near-alcoholism, binge eating, drastic weight fluctuations, and professional instability. Frustrated by lack of film roles—except for Serenade (1956) for Warner Bros.—and harsh media scrutiny, Lanza left Hollywood, relocating his family to Italy to rebuild his life and career. There, he made two mediocre European films and gave generally successful concert performances before dying, apparently of a heart attack, on October 7, 1959, at the young age of 38. He left behind four children and a devastated wife who died five months later of a drug overdose after returning to Hollywood.
Decades after his death, Lanza's seven films and numerous remarkable recordings continue to awe and inspire singers and audiences. He is honored with film festivals, ongoing CD releases, and worldwide musical tributes—most notably by Domingo, Carreras, Pavarotti, and many other vocal stars. People Magazine called his voice "magnificent" in 1998. Simply put, Mario Lanza remains irreplaceable.
