David Macniven was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, and grew up in Kingston and Peterborough, Ontario. Since 1995, he has lived in Toronto, residing in East York with his daughter and son.
He earned an Honours BA in History from Huron College at the University of Western Ontario and holds a Theatre Arts Diploma from Studio 58, the professional theatre training program at Langara College in Vancouver.
As an actor, David has performed across theatre, television, and film from Victoria, B.C. to New York City. His theatre credits include The Oresteia (Equity Showcase), Bathhouse Suite, Benchmarks, Burying Michael (Buddies In Bad Times), Measure for Measure (Oomph Group), and An American Without Tears (Summerworks). At the Toronto Fringe Festival, he appeared in The Peace Line (1997), the critically acclaimed Non Sequitur (1999), and the hit Catering Queen (2006). He also performed in the popular bittergirl in Toronto and off-Broadway in New York. More recently, he appeared in Taming of the Shrew for A.C.T. Productions at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, reprised Catering Queen in 2009 at the Tarragon Theatre, and played the title role in "I" at the 2011 Summerworks Festival at Theatre Passe Muraille. David has appeared in over fifty film and television projects, including Unrivalled, Murdoch Mysteries, and Lost Girl. His film work includes Reaction Stick, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival; Ham & Cheese; How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey; and Welcome to Mooseport featuring Gene Hackman and Ray Romano.
As a writer, David created Public Re(ve)lations, a one-man show he wrote, directed, and performed at Studio 58. He also developed Hollywood North, a weekly scripted improv series for the stage with his company Acme Theatrical Productions in Vancouver. For the screen, he co-wrote and starred in the short film The Proposal (Half Bros Films). Other unproduced shorts include The Code, Shoelaces, and The Rehearsal, which was shortlisted for the NSI Drama Prize in 2000. David is an alumnus of the National Screen Institute’s Totally Television Program. Alongside his writing and producing partner Todd Dulmage, he is developing the mini-series Home Front from that program. David and Todd continue to collaborate on various projects for stage and screen that have occupied their creative energies over the past decade.
David is committed to volunteer work in the arts. An elected member of ACTRA's governing council since 2000, he currently serves as Vice President of Finance. He is a board director of the Creative Arts Saving and Credit Union, which supports the local creative arts community. Since 2008, he has been President of the Board of Equity Showcase Theatre, guiding the company’s relaunch and its 50th Anniversary celebrations.
