With a career exceeding 45 years, Manolo Blahnik has established himself as one of the most influential shoe designers worldwide. His footwear has captivated a global audience of devoted admirers. He is the focus of Michael Roberts' detailed biopic, Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards (2017), contributed to the documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel (2011), and is celebrated for his iconic shoe designs featured alongside Milena Canonero’s Academy Award-winning costumes in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2005).
Born in the Canary Islands to a Spanish mother and Czech father, Blahnik studied languages and art in Geneva before relocating to Paris in 1965 with the initial aim of becoming a set designer. During a 1969 visit to New York, he presented his theatre designs to Diana Vreeland, former editor-in-chief of American Vogue, who encouraged him to focus on his shoe creations. Blahnik mastered shoemaking by engaging with factory workers, machine operators, pattern cutters, and technicians.
In 1970, he launched his first boutique in Chelsea, London. By 1972, Ossie Clark, then London's leading designer, featured Blahnik’s shoes, propelling his career forward. A true craftsman, Blahnik personally perfects the exquisitely shaped lasts and heels for his shoes. His distinctive designs are instantly recognizable for their unique lines, balanced silhouettes, meticulous craftsmanship, and luxurious quality. As he states, "Shoes help transform a woman."
From its flagship store in London, the brand has expanded globally. The United States has honored Blahnik’s exceptional talent with CFDA awards in 1987, 1990, and 1998. The British Fashion Council awarded him in 1990, 1999, and 2003, while Spain recognized him with La Aguja de Oro (2001) and the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes, presented by King Juan Carlos I. His accolades also include: Honorary Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in November 2007, the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award in September 2008, the Footwear News Lifetime Achievement Award in November 2011, the British Fashion Council Outstanding Achievement Award in 2012, and the Premio Nacional de Diseño de Moda in Spain in 2012.
